sandylioness -> Chronic Fatigue/Fibro and Play (5/14/2007 12:04:38 AM)

I bottomed last night at a party, went farther than I normally do and felt good at the time.  I played with someone who is very experienced, highly ethical and good at reading me.  Wound up sleeping all day today and woke up with significant chronic fatigue symptoms - achy, flu-like, feverish, more sensitive to pain, dehydrated despite drinking lots of water, out of sorts.  I know there is a such a thing as sub let-down, I've experienced that before and this is not it.  Based on my symptoms from past experience, I know I will be ill for the next several days.  I have gotten similarly sick from full-body massages in the past.

I have chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, mild bipolar, chronic migraines, PTSD, seizures, celiac disease and suffered a mild stroke in the past.  I'm trying to find resources on playing safe with a disability, but I'm not finding anything that specifically addresses auto-immune issues or chronic fatigue.

Is there anyone out there who plays safely with CFS or fibro?  I'd like to have some idea of what to expect.

well...from my experience.....

really good play equals really good flare.

saturday night was wonderful, Sir and i spent about 5 hours in more sensual than D/s play.  he ended up having to deal with a severe pain spike that had me in tears, two seizures, and dizziness to the point that i was about to walk into the doorframe.

i have fibro, suspected lupus and/or MS, borderline diabetes, arthritis, pseudo-seizures, sjorgren's syndrome, at least 3 strokes in the past, and dammit i cant ever remember the other one.  cold hands and feet issues.

its not easy.  at any given time of day, my bad places will shift.  where its all good and well to touch one day, the next will have me crying with unwanted pain.

there's a book i've seen advertised, although i've not read it yet, called Enabling Romance, its available at www.newmobility.com/bookstore.cfm  and it might have some help for you, too.

kitten, who struggles most days.

I too have Lupus and the fibro that goes along with it.......... along with a few other health issues.  I am a Domme and a pretty "active" one when sessioning.  When I overdo things on an extended basis, I can pretty much count on having a flare.  I keep the prednisone handy because I know I'm gonna need it for a bit.

adoracat--- thanks so much for that link to the book.  I'm going to order it and see what it's all about.

greetings sandylioness,

i have fibro, migraines, spondylolisthesis, disk problems, arthritis, post traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety, and possible cfs, so i can sympathize.

really, the best thing i've found is listen to your body, constantly communicate how you are doing physically. that way if you feel like something bad might happen physically, you can communicate that and your dominant can decide whether or not to stop things at that point. lots of aftercare and next-day care is always good, extra rest, extra fluids, etc. i can't say anything that you probably haven't already thought of...and i have a lot of the same problems - play causing flares. i don't think there is any good way to deal with it...but you do have my sympathy, because i know what it's like. *hugs*

annabelle.

you're most welcome.  :)

one thing that i HAVE noticed recently is that when i start flaring, all my sense seems to fly out the window.  *sighs*  Sir and i had a long misunderstanding this AM that finally led to me being told in words of very few letters exactly where i stand.

and its VERY good, where i stand, but...the truth is that i will forget again, and stress myself out again, and i MUST keep logs of our online chats so i can remind myself of the good things.

kitten who hates being broken.

It can take a toll on My body also.
I do find however the more active I stay the better I feel.
But there are the days I wake up with a migraine and I cant even get up never mind try to do a session/scene.

Sometimes I will go through the motions but its not really gratifing when you feel like a truck ran you over.

MstrssScarlet -> RE: Chronic Fatigue/Fibro and Play (5/15/2007 8:36:32 PM)

I suffer from fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, chronic tendonitis in my right elbow and shoulder, and cervical spondylosis.  I have medications that help, but avoiding stress as much as I can and getting plenty of rest before playing seem to help the most.  I've heard of different diets and other 'miracle cures', but they all turn out to be scams.  Tai Chi is good for keeping the body relaxed and toned at the same time.  I have a tape that I follow as often as time allows.  Learning to listen to your body is probably the most important thing.
So far, none of these have interfered with play, but sometimes I pay afterwards if I have a particularly long or strenuous session.  A big play party is almost a guaranteed flare up.  I always try to plan a 'rest day' for the day after when I know this is going to occur.
Although I'm a pro domme, I try never to schedule more than one session on any given day in case I have an unexpected flare up.

I just took a look at the link you provided adoracat.  One of the books there (Enabling Romance) was on one of the talk shows just this afternoon.  Don't ask me which one because I keep the TV on for company as much as anything.  It's too damn hard for me to sit still long enough to watch it all the way through.  Anyway, it was highly recommended by some doctor.  He also recommended people have at least 200 orgasms a year.  That's probably what caught my attention.  LOL  Now I know where to order it.  Thank you!

yay!  i've been able to help!  *beaming*

and yes, i am EXACTLY like this in person.  *smiles*  "crack monkey" is one of my hubby's most common names for me.

one of the absolutely cheesiest websites out there is this:  http://www.butyoudontlooksick.com/2004/11/the_spoon_theory.php

its a very accurate description of how people with autoimmune difficulties such as fibromyalgia have to hoard their energies for each day, and be aware of how each activity is going to affect them.  cheesy, yes.  but a good jumping-off point to understanding ones' self and explaining to our loved ones how things are going to affect us at times.

i chose to spend today with my Evil Twin Skippy, aka my grown daughter.  right now i'm hurting VERY badly because we were out driving around (and i cant tolerate so much UV exposure) on top of the emotional upheaval i've had the last day or two, and not sleeping over 2 hours a night the last couple/three days.  i expect to have a long day in bed tomorrow.

kitten, who is up too late, yet again.

i too deal with fibromyalgia and it's effects on my life....blessings to you all on your strength to go on and have the best life you are able to, as i strive to do as well. it is all we can do, take the very best care of ourselves and keep our attitude positive and keep hope and joy alive in our hearts.
blessed be,

leftofcenter -> RE: Chronic Fatigue/Fibro and Play (5/16/2007 7:07:11 AM)

Yep sweetie, it's your own personal price for playing hard.  You need extended aftercare, and most of it is your responsibility.  Everyone agrees I think...fluids...vitamin sufficiency...a close check on your blood glucose and your mental state will affect how you feel after.  My "drop" used to come 24 hours after playing, like clockwork.
I'll say this as well, when I'm in a migraine state...as well as that big endorphin high state...I "forget" to look after myself.  You may need someone to remind you to take care of yourself.  You probably already know how to help some of your symptoms that come at other times....do some preventative care, if you take anti-inflamitories, start a regimine of them as soon as you expect to play, hydrate yourself beforehand, go into the session with the proper nutrition to keep your blood sugar as stable as it can be.  Lots of people dont realize the strange things endorphins do to your bg level.
Personally, I've just accepted that this is a price I pay for playing hard...sometimes it's hard to believe it's worth it to me..lol.  Thank you for bringing this up...I've never heard anyone who suffers the same effects that I do.

I am glad I'm not alone in knowing what it feels like to have these Chronic symptoms.
Its good to see some ideas on how others deal with it.

Lockit -> RE: Chronic Fatigue/Fibro and Play (5/16/2007 7:41:15 PM)

Hello,

I too have fibro and the sister type things, plus a rare genetic illness.  I have had most all my life.  I found the harder you play... the next day is minimal compared to what the second or third day will be.  Sometimes you can work through it and other times it put's ya down and nothing gets through except the parts you don't want.

I have never believed in any miracle products, but did say if someone ever offered me something for free... I might give it a chance... because I believe that if they offer it for free... it works better than anything else.. because you become a paying customer if it works, so it's worthwhile to give for free.  I found green magma.. many makers... and after months in bed, I was up and taking walks... no longer weak and my mental fatigue and memory were greatly improved.

Before you think this is spam... I don't sell the stuff... don't know anyone that does and I am not promoting anything except my own experience with the stuff.  Within two doses I saw improvement and I didn't expect that nor would I have believed it had it not happened to me!  A friend saw me a month and a half after I started using it and the last time he had seen me I looked like I was dying.  I was darn close... my lips were turning blue!  He said... "Wow... you are beautiful!  What happened?  What have you done?" The stuff works!

You just have to pace yourself and if you don't... you burn... but sometimes that slow burn is way worth the blaze it started with!

Be Well! Lockit
