I would like to express from the bottom of my heart, my sincere thanks and gratitude to the men and women who have fought and are fighting to keep this country free. And especially to those who have died so that we could live in the greatest country in the world.
My own Father was wounded in The Korean War and I have never told him that I appreciate his service to this country. I will this time.

The fact that I have studied the Vietnam War extensively and wound up with a tremendous cynicism about that fiasco. As well as thinking Shrub (Bush the Lesser) should never have been allowed to send our men and women to fight wars, does not mean I dont feel a tremendous sense of pride and thankfulness for those who have been put in harms way or paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

My hat is off to you all, safe return.

A close friend of mine's 21 year old son is currently serving (Army) in Iraq.

My community lost two more sons last week in Iraq. Their loss was quite devastating to their families and friends, and a Memorial Service was held for them which turned out a very large gathering. It's hard to explain to a grieving Mother or Father that their son or daughter died in a far away place so that they could enjoy freedom. Freedom is all too often taken totally for granted by those enjoying it.

Freedom is paid for with the lives of sons and daughters. It is an absolute shame on the blood of those who gave their lives so that we may be free when we take their sacrifice for granted. As a former military member, I will pay homage today, Memorial Day, to those who have given the supreme sacrifice so that we may be free to pursue our lives, our liberties, and our pursuits of happiness. Please acknowledge your freedom this day and thank those who have given their lives in order to give you the opportunity.

Amen.
i believe in our armed forces and support those who choose to enter it.

i don't think one has to approve of the wars that are being fought to be respectfull and proud of those who are serving in them.

my thanks to my father, grandfather and great grandfather for serving in the navy. my thanks to everyone else's fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers who served in other branches.

I would also like to add my thanks to all my brothers and sisters in arms, past and present, for their service to this country of ours.

To all of those who have served, who do serve, and who will serve in the future -

Thank you.

Please know that whether I agree with my government, whether I agree/d with the choices that place/d you where you are/were, whether I wish you were 'here' rather than 'there'; I am and always will be greatful for your presence, aware of the necessity of your existance, and awed by your willingness to 'be.'

It's a disgrace the poor way we treat veterans. They get very little pay when they are serving and very little care when they are old. Yet congresspersons vote themselves huge pay raises and retirement benefits and perks while cutting the veterans right and left. My father served in the First World War (that's right, the FIRST) and all he got was a brass marker for his grave.

Well living in the US, at least at this point we are an all volunteer service. That says something to the rest of the world. We may not all agree with what our government tells us to do. We do it regardless.

Shit happens. We at least have the right to know it may happen when we enter the service. i was in the first Persian Gulf War. The outpouring of love we experience when we return you just cannot describe. I just hope when the current war is over they feel the same love when they return.

On a side note, while looking at netscape today for news. We have this article.

Pat Tillman Likely Killed by Friendly Fire

This Spring's death in Afghanistan of Arizona Cardinals' player Pat Tillman was likely due to "friendly fire," according to a report by the Arizona Republic. Mr. Tillman, who was 27 at the time of his death, gave up millions of pro football dollars to join the Army after America was attacked on 9/11. Do you think the newly-revealed circumstances of his death might impact morale?

Word of the changed conclusions regarding the circumstances of Mr. Tillman's death circulated among Members of Congress last night as an E-Mail was sent by staff of the House of Representatives Armed Services Committee about the new findings.

That E-Mail read, in part, "Army just called to give us a heads up. They have every reason to believe the 15-6 investigation shows Pat Tillman was killed as a result of friendly fire." Army Regulation 15-6 is used in the case of "fratricide accidents," in which personnel are killed by what is often described as "friendly fire."

It went on, according to the Arizona Republic, to tell Members that, "The Army has notified his family, so it may come out in the media this weekend."

Mr. Tillman had given up a multimillion-dollar contract as a safety with the National Football League's Arizona franchise in order to enlist in the United States Army in the wake of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on America.

Reports of Mr. Tillman's death on April 22nd reverberated around the globe, as millions of fans heard for the first time the details of his decision to offer his life for his country.

While his enlistment recalled for many the patriotism of famous Americans who had served their country in previous wars, Mr. Tillman disdained publicity regarding and insisted upon serving his country quietly and without fanfare.

According to the Arizona Republic, the new findings regarding Mr. Tillman's death were given to some Members of Congress yesterday, and also to his parents on the eve of Memorial Day commemorative ceremonies.

Congressman Trent Franks, a Republican from Arizona, is quoted by today's Republic as saying that, "It does seem pretty clear that he was killed by friendly fire." Congressman Franks is on the House Armed Services Committee, and was alerted about the new information regarding Mr. Tillman's death by the Army's Legislative Liaison Office.

Mr. Tillman was awarded the Silver Star for valor during combat.

Do you think the newly-revealed circumstances of Pat Tillman's death might impact morale?

Not sure of the validity of it yet. It is a shame if it was friendly fire.

Right beside that article we have yet another disturbing one.

Army Expanding 'Stop-Loss' Program
By JOHN J. LUMPKIN

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Army will prevent soldiers in units set to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan from leaving the service at the end of their terms, a top general said Wednesday.

I would hope that people understand that in a war, bad things happen. It is a shame that Pat Tillman had to die from friendly fire. It doesn't change the fact that he gave up plenty to serve a country he wanted to give back to. He should still be an inspiration.

I was touched to see this thread. My brother is in the Air Force and involved in the Iraqi conflict. It can be stressful everyday not knowing how (or where) he is. I pray for him and everyone else involved in this conflict -- especially for the wisdom of those in charge.

I used to do tours with my band in Japan and Korea. We would play for the American military that were stationed there. These were some of my favorite times. The men and women always were so thankful and appreciative that we would come all the way over there to play music for them. I would always let them know that we were the ones that were thankful for all that they were doing for us. What we did was easy.

The job these men and women must do...well...there is no greater. I remember when i worked in Boston i had to visit the veterans hospital in Brockton MA to work on their systems and there is a large sign over the door which states " The Price of Freedom is Visible Here ". And it was.
Saw some very sad sights that i wish i could have changed. A very humbling experience indeed. Always respectful.

My thoughts were posted in
My Creative Writing area on
this close to My heart days
celebration. My Thanks have
been shown not only in passing
on the mindset that was given
Me to serve My Country if able
befor the call goes out of a need
to My children of which three
currently serve as Marines just
as the past 4 generations of My
family have served in sum form
Militaraly but in My weekly deeds
of tending to those veterens here
now whom still are in need of Our
service so that they too can still
enjoy the freedoms that all at sum
point in their time fought for. To Me
Giving My thanks to veterens comes
each week as I carry those from My
community whom do not drive where
they need to be as I have since the
first week I arrived here in the USA.
I also have two slaves whom currently
serve. I am thankful to live in a Country
where those whom serve it do so voluntaraly.
After all what good is freedom if not practiced.

In other news, the Bush administration has now ordered the military to NOT allow people to finish their terms of service or retire if they are stationed overseas. Military people agreed to this as a possibility when they signed on, so those who thought they were being sent for 1 year to Iraq have now discovered they are stuck there indefinitely.

Due to the Afghanistan and Iraq debacles, enlistment in the "all volunteer" military is at a new low, and the government has already set in motion the process to start up the draft again.

The saying in the army when I was working on an army base was "Friendly fire isnt." I suspect this is true in other branches as well.

Friendly fire does seem like a strange way to put it. It's like the bullet has a smile on it's face as it tears you apart. I guess it doesn't matter to Pat Tillman who's bullet it was. He is still dead.
