Status: offline 		As most of you know I have had a run in with what is called "MRSA" and for those who don't know what that is ...
specific strain of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium that has developed antibiotic resistance to all penicillins, including methicillin.

I had two boils lanced and tested and they were MRSA and I was put on Bactrim (antibiotic) and once again, another one returned. This time, the boil wasn't large enough to lance so the doctor gave me a special soap to wash my body with to kill the MRSA on my body and an ointment to put into my nostils because MRSA lives there...I am positive that with this, I will have a better handle on my problem..Thankfully, I am not running a fever or feeling bad...except they gave me a couple pain killers at the hospital that have me feeling blah lol...

Status: offline 		whoa, my deepest sympathy. My dearest online friend is a lab tech and she carries MRSA in her eyes and bladder. When it acts up, it knocks her back from working for weeks.

Status: offline 		My biggest concern is ...will I be able to lead a long healthy life with MRSA?? To date..the only problem I have had is the boils and a slight fever....

Oh, YES you can live a long healthy life with it...just know you will always be positive.  There is no "cure" for MRSA...but it won't kill you like HIV can or Cancer can if you take good care of yourself and keep your M.D. appointments.  (I'm a nurse who worked in a facility that had many MRSA positive patients)

Status: offline 		thankyou earthycouple...I found out recently, that a dear friend to whom I was intimate with on several occasions in my past (we recently reconnected) almost died due to an infection (MRSA) that he ignored....we have had sex but use protection and measures to protect each other....I take my health very seriously now, especially because my late Master passed away from a bad infection...I will use the soap every day and the ointment in my nose and eat well..and hopefully, live long.

Status: offline 		MRSA is a lot more common than people think.  I have a dear friend who contracted it post surgery and again, I've had more than my share of patients with MRSA.  The very best precautions are handwashing (to protect others) and taking care of yourself.  Which, as I've said, you seem to be doing. 

There is no reason you can't have sexual and/or intimate contact with others as long as you are aware and take needed precautions.

Status: offline 		to be in the medical field, i believe, takes a very special person who understands that the rewards of helping others outweigh the risks taken... but in the same, taking all the necessary precautions.

No more than being a road construction worker...how many get killed on freeways each year?  or how bout linemen who freeze in the dead of night trying to restore power and fishermen who are out for months at a time in the most horrid conditions?  and teachers getting shot in schools? 

I could go on all day...I love being a nurse and wouldn't trade it for anything.  (I know my slave would say the same thing...he's also a nurse) The things I do that are "potentially" dangerous I am the "owner" of that danger by taking proper infection control precautions.  For other jobs...they rely on others and their surroundings for their safety.

Thanks so much, Krissi!  I love my work and I do it because of the patients (dear heaven..it's not for the money! *S*)  I really love helping when I can.

Look at it this way:
If you get the education, and are in nursing, then you may get scared, but at least you have more knowledge than the average individual about how to prevent and/or treat these things that can kill.

I'd rather be scared and know what I'm scared of, instead of being scared because I don't know, or being lulled into a sense of false security by not knowing.  Ignorance is not bliss, and things one does not know CAN hurt you, big time.

I have never been scared dealing with a patient...with any medical conditions and I certainally have no fear of contracting something from said patients.  I'm more afraid of contracting something from some guy who sneezes on me when riding the Metra.

Status: offline 		It just seems like a heavy gamble sometimes.  And I've never been much good at gambling.  However, considering all the benefits nursing lends to being a master I'm not about to give it up right away.

lmao...I suppose that's true to an extent...but there is nothing I do with a slave that I couldn't teach someone who's not in the medical profession (sounds, needles, cutting, enemas, catheters).  So if that's your push, I'd consider somthing else that's not so "scary for you"

I reiterate there are fewer nurses contracting things from patients than are workers getting killed or hurt on the interstates.  If you want a non gamble job....go work in an office...oh wait....offices were in the world trade centers.   Um...trying to help here....go pick up garbage...oh wait you could get run over there.  Um....go teach kids....teachers get shot all the time anymore.  Um....be a mechanic....nope...mechanics are always torn and cut up.  How bout a railroad worker?  oh geez.....they get run over occasionally.  You could be a bartender...no they get hit in the nose sometimes when occasional fights break out.  You could be a server in a resturant....noooo their knees and wrists eventually wear out.  Man....you better just sit at home and chat online all day...well hell...you will get carpal tunnel doing that....you can't win...just don't get out of bed tomorrow...damn laying around causes pressure ulcers...life is a gamble....if you don't want to roll the dice....die now.

Status: offline 		Hm...I started by worrying about whether I would contract a potentially fatal disease.  But now you've gone and described all the possible ways I could die except having a third world dictator launch a nuke specifically at me.  What are the odds on that?

I have three nurses in my family, I'm well aware of the risks to it and no, I don't find it enought to keep me out of it.  Honestly did what I said give you the impression that I would rather be hiding in a bomb shelter drinking purified water and eating MREs?

Becoming a nurse for the dom capabilities is not my primary push.  My primary push is for the money and mobility it offers.  Sorry that I don't find caring for them to be a treasure in itself.  I feel good about it but it isn't my main reason.

Status: offline 		If you are into nursing for the money (and mobility...I'll give you that)  then I would never want you taking care of me and I venture to guess those nurses in your family haven't give you nearly enough insight.  good luck


ps. (here's where I edited) For anyone who wants to go into nursing for the right reasons:  the changes of contracting a disease are unbelieveably minimal when you adhere to proper precautions. 

However, for Masque66 dear god it's so unbelievably high you should run screaming....I have ten disease as we speak just from caring from kids the last year....run run fast...nursing sucks!

Status: offline 		MRSA is present in all our nostrils. It is when it colonizes it becomes an infection. Once you have been treated with the proper antibiotics which is usually Vancomycin you can not be positive. You will always have it but only til it colonizes again will you test positive for via nasal swab or blood culture. Good luck to you. Hope you feel better soon.
