i have chronic pain that ranges from a 3 to a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10.  A/anyone have any suggestions for dealing with it?  i'm not really looking for a Rx recommendation but if Y/you think Y/your meds are the magic bullet, that'd be nice to know.

well this is a tough question without more information.  what sort of pain, where is it, what triggers it, how long have you had it?  Oh and yeah...what did the doctor say????

and what do you mean "your meds are the magic bullet?"

Have you had a referral to a pain management clinic/practice?  A good one uses the whole range of therapies from traditional medication approaches to things such as acupuncture, massage, hypnosis, etc.

I have found that heavy S&M play helps me a lot.  Periods when I'm playing a lot I usually take much less painkillers (Ibufen) than during perionds when there is little of play.  And I never ever take painkillers on the same day before a such a session (sometimes few hours after).

i agree...this is a good thing, but....

the doctor that diagnosed my fibromyalgia said (actual quote)  "from what i understand and read, this is a painful disorder.  i will NEVER give you any painkillers, so dont ask.  i'll give you antidepressants, and you will take them, and you wont focus on your pain any longer."

for some reason, i didnt chose to keep him as my physician any longer.  some doctors will NOT treat any sort of pain issues, nor will they write a consult to have their patients see a specialist.  i was later told by another doctor that the antidpressant "cure" was what doctors do to patients that they consider to have "all in their mind" ailments.

funny, i did get a WTF? out of the man when he found i didnt have any reflexes.  ya know, the lil hammer test?  no reaction whatsoever.  according to some sites, that's a pretty strong indicator of MS.  waddaya know.

kitten, who isnt getting any treatment at the moment, and goes on by sheer willpower some days.

I am certified in Pain and Symptom Management. Chronic pain is managable and treatable. You really need a full pain assesment by a MD who specializes in Pain Control or a Palliative Specialist. It is impossible to give you any answer without knowing your pain history and type of pain you are experiencing.

I know you live in Ohio, so I am giving you a link to a Pain Clinic a colleague of mine is familiar with. If it is not in your area, you can always ask them for a referral to some one in your area. You will notice it is a cancer center, but they also treat pain due to non cancer related problems.

Master is in pain 24/7 with arthritis and rotator cuff syndrome. He can no longer take oral painkillers because they make Him feel ill. He smokes marijuana for pain relief and also to help with insomnia, nausea and lack of appetite.

The pity is that it is illegal here, so we have to go do a drug deal every few months

While it is illegal here also, in my practice, if I am comfortable with the patient, I often suggest smoking a little weed too. I know many oncologits and palliative specialist who will give the informatio in a casual suggestive way and let the patient take it from there.

Thanks for the link mbmn.  i have crappy insurance, which is why i'm not seeing a massage therapist, chiropractor or alternative treatments.  Yes, it's fibromyalgia.  i don't think i'm in full flare but it's kicking up.

*smiles* It was His doctor at the time who first suggested it, he would even get it for Him. Sadly that doctor has now retired so it is back to getting it off the street

Some ideas for living with chronic pain -

pacing yourself - identify what activities trigger your symptoms and avoid overdoing these activities or allow yourself time to recover  eg. go to the shops 4 times a week and buy a few things at a time rather than doing one big shop, don't do the vacuuming and cleaning the bathroom in the one day, vacuum one room a day, if you know that driving increases your tiredness and make sure that you don't have anything else planned for that day
exercise - gentle exercise such as stretches, some yoga/Pilates moves, short walks..these can help both physically and psychologically
meditation/relaxation exercises - there sould be lots of scripts/mp3s available on the net - setting time aside each day to meditate can be very helpful, if meditation is not our thing then mindfulness/awareness exercises may be more appropriate
medication - talk to your doctors about ideas
cog behavioural therapy techniques - there can be a couple of different types of pain, there is the physical pain that we feel and also the psychological pain that comes from our attitudes/emotions about our pain eg. I feel sore so I cancel a lunch date with friends, I then feel frustrated and guilty and weak for cancelling the lunch, I feel I should be able to cope with my pain, I am weak/useless because of the pain etc etc... this emotional overlay can then reduce our ability to accept/live with the physical symptoms and so what would usually be a 3/10 on a day when we are feeling emotionally strong feels like a 5/10 on a day when we are beating ourselves up psychologically... we can get caught in this awful cycle of physical pain, feeling bad about our pain, physical pain feels worse and so on and so on.
some additives/caffeine/foods can trigger symptoms
remind yourself that it is ok to tell people when you are having a crappy day, don’t bottle up your emotions of feel that you need to be a martyr
do enjoyable activities that you can still do when having a bad day eg. listen to a favourite cd, burn incense, watch a soppy movie, call a friend
get enough rest/sleep
Okay, these are some ideas off the top of my head, there are also internet groups for people with CFS/FM that may have other ideas.

There is a documentary about a man who had CF (he has since passed away) and uses S and m as a way of exerting control over his body as well as managing pain. It's in our Blockbuster queue but Ive not seen it yet.

I am also dealing with chronic pain.
I take the med's to help - but when I feel the useage is getting to heavy I will also make a tea of pot, chamomile, and catnip. (All herbs to help with pain.)

it DOES help.  the endorphins released by some good scening can lessen the other pains that keep hanging around.

i feel VERY good and floaty at the moment, and the "ordinary" stuff isnt bothering me much at all.  i might actually even be able to sleep tonight!

kitten, who averages 4 hours of broken sleep a night usually
