Status: offline 		Reminds me of the time I went along with a driver to unload a load of carpet rolls direct from the factory. This man owned his rig and boasted all the way up that he could spin it backwards on a dime; something that no one else could do. He was thrilled that he finally had a helper that would witness his great skills; someone who could go back to the shop and tell the other drivers that he indeed was better than they.

The job site was a new wing for a hospital and the site foreman wanted the driver to back his rig in between two of the new buildings to unload. The space was wide enough for three rigs to park side by side, but the driver simply could not make the 90 degree turn while backing in order to be the first truck at the temporary docks.

He tried for 30 minutes; forward and backward over and over again until he finally managed to wedge the trailer between the two buildings, perpendicular to the direction he needed to be. He cried all the time while doing it, saying that it was an impossible turn. I asked him if he needed me to put a dime out back, to which he shot me a disgusted look then jumped out to see how badly we was wedged.

Eventually, the site foreman pulled rank and put another driver into this man's rig for the purpose of getting it backed up to the dock. Pulling the rig back out into the main yard, the replacement driver easily negotiated the 90 degree turn in one shot and put the rig where it needed to be for unloading.

Needless to say, the owner of the rig was kind of humiliated and not happy at being shown that he couldn't back up his talk.

Status: offline 		when i go ask someone if they can move a little so i can get around without hitting them, they will often tell me i can make it just fine...i look doubtful, then say, "well, ok if you think so, i'll go with your experience & knowledge since this is my second day solo out here."  it's amazing how fast  & how far they'll move their equipment...LOL

To be honest, he had the look of pure anger. I thought he was going to rip the shift lever right out of the console and club me to death with it.

(Which wouldn't have been difficult, as it didn't feel like it was securely fastened.)

It would have been a horrible way to go!

This guy was the scourge of the shop. He drove a tractor that was 25 years old (1979 at the time), the fiberglass cab was half eaten away, the freakin' cab doors had to be held shut with bailing wire, he modified the transmission to have something like 5 forward ranges and 3 reverse ranges on top of however many gears he built into his gearbox... it was quite amazing to any of us that he managed to pass all of the state inspections required at the time. He was a bear of a man, never shaved, never bathed, and had a sour disposition. He drank quite frequently, which really scared the hell out of me whenever I drew the short straw to ride with this monster.

So no... being clubbed to death by this monster would not be the way I want to go. What a scary, scary final sight to see...
