Yeah.  We had a long talk with his doctor about it.  And what kinds of things that he could eat and how much.  And for him. . . carbs were the big thing that he had to cut back on.  He is on something similar to that south beach diet thing.

unfortunely Aylee - everything the two previous mentioned items have a carb value - including milk  But at least it is an easy way to calculate insulin ratios

So it's a bummer for a kid to have diabetes at five!

Type 1?

she is the most awesome little kid dc ...... a real trooper.  She knows when she can eat - and she knows what she can eat.  She wanted for snack this afternoon a hot dog. 1/4 chocolate chip muffin, 10 grapes.  A perfect snack with 25 carbs to get her to dinner without dropping too low.

Well. . . there was the becoming diabetic plus the overweight issue, plus the cholesteral level, plus the blood pressure. . . plus the testosterone level.  . .

So he has a specific amount of calories and what type of calories that he can eat.  (Plus a bunch of other rules, like no salt, no caffine, no grapefruit, and so on and so forth)

And for us. . . with me being nearly vegetarian, (I think that rice and pasta are main courses) it has been the carbs that have to be watched.

No insulin has been needed yet!  YAY.  And the "metformin" (I think that I have spelled that correctly) has helped LOADS.

So, yeah, I think in terms of carbs for blood sugar control.  LOL  But he lurves the fact that I cook more meat now.  LOL

Sorry to hear that the little one can't have halloween candies.  But there should be some other nummies that s/he can have.  I have found that there are almost always work arounds!

And yes s/he does sound like quite a trooper!  YAY!

Sweetie,

Pretty much all women are.  If you randomly took blood from women walking down the street, you would think that at least 3/4s of use were going to drop from low blood sugar.

Aylee - sweetums snookums darling.  I am guessing that he is type 2 (Adult onset)  Weight is a big issue with type 2 and that is why exercise is such a big part of the total plan.  The less extra weight you are carrying around the more sensitive to insulin the cells are.  That is why many women (myself included) develop a form of diabetes when they are expecting (called gestational diabetes).  Metformin is a great drug - my Dad is on it.

The advances in diabetes care are fantastic.  I am hoping that within a few years she will be on an insulin pump which will very slowly inject insulin 24 hours a day - the way the body itself works.  One needle every 3 days instead of 5 a day.  And islet cell transplants (islet cells are the specific cells in the pancreas which secrete the insulin).  The University of Edmonton developed the procedure - now commonly known worldwide as the Edmonton Protocol.  Unfortunately - you must use dead people for these transplants and it takes 2-3 donors to get enough cells for one transplant - which is done like a blood transfusion.  The are now looking at pig cells to see if they would work as well.

Here endeth today's science/biology lesson.

JAQ: diabetes is a disease of TOO MUCH sugar in the blood - the opposite of what you have.  If your doctor is telling you diabetes - find one who knows WTF they are talking about

Yep, you have it right.  And I was not arguing about it, just talking about how I looked at it.  Since there have been very specific changes that had to be made in our house.  .

I do know that people have different things that they have to do to keep diabetes under control.  (As in insulin versus no insulin, how often they have to check their blood sugar and how strict their diet is.)

And yeah. . . I remember the oh-so-fun glucose test for the gestational diabetes.

Now, if I had failed that one, there is a longer one, but I think it is only  a 3 hour wait.  But I passed! YAY
