Have you read Washington Itself by E.J. Applewhite? It's an architectural guide to the city.

trappedinamuseum -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:41:41 PM)

I haven't, no.

I usually just try to stick to my Greek art knowledge...gets me through.

trappedinamuseum -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:46:51 PM)

Oh I'm certain I would.  I read books like its my job.

I will pick it up next time I am out.

Thanks for the suggestion!

By the by, what's your favorite art piece in the National Gallery?

dcnovice -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:49:22 PM)

Oh God, that's a tough one. I love the "Voyage of Life" series, and there's a wonderful Monet cathedral. Also quite fond of the Calder mobile. How bout you?

I was recommending a book to trapped.

trappedinamuseum -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:51:42 PM)

I love the Monet (its the only impressionism I really do like).

I'm an Anicent Art girl, but I love the Duccio, Caravaggio, and the Ghiberti (I saw a sculpture of his in the sculpture conservation lab.  I almost cried.  Then I got to the Degas waxes, and I think I passed out for a minute).

I really like the Da Vinci, because it is not by Da Vinci, and the National Gallery won't admit it.

But, at the Freer, its the Peacock Room all the way!

HarleyKitty69 -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:52:04 PM)

ohh  I apologize for asking
*rolls eyes*

dcnovice -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:52:24 PM)

Almost said Honore Daumier's "The Uprising," but then I remembered that it's at the Phillips!

trappedinamuseum -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:54:10 PM)

A good choice though!

mmmm...art makes me happy.

Just thought of Gerard David's "Rest on the Flight Into Egypt."

And how could I forget the Last Supper?!

trappedinamuseum -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:56:50 PM)

I don't know...good painting...bad technique, but a good painting.

dcnovice -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:58:11 PM)

"Flight" or "Supper"?

trappedinamuseum -> RE: Last one to post wins! (10/2/2007 7:59:50 PM)

Supper.  Da Vinci was horrible at taking the time to do the fresco properly.  He tried to cheat, and got a sub-par product (albeit a masterpiece).  That's why it is so hard to protect and conserve now.  He did it incorrectly.
