It's starting to feel that way.
Slightly bored here, so i moved all the furniture and wall hangings in the bed room. Chaos shouldn't mind.

just found a black widow in my stairway..... keeping her as a house pet as long as she stays put

i WIN

FelineFae -> RE: Last one to post, wins. (5/13/2010 9:27:20 AM)

Sure you don't want to catch her and relocate her outside ?
i'm not one for killing a critter if it can be helped ( 'cept wasp ) but a black widow in the house ?

dragonseeker -> RE: Last one to post, wins. (5/13/2010 9:38:09 AM)

She is fairly well out of the way in the stairway on the way up to the door.... guess that would make her more of a guard spider then a house pet.  My dog is WAY too interested in small moving things for me to have any spiders like that inside.

mnottertail -> RE: Last one to post, wins. (5/13/2010 9:39:50 AM)

bite that bitch, spidey, good girl!!!  kill!!! good spider.  Kill!!!

GoddessImaginos -> RE: Last one to post, wins. (5/13/2010 9:43:07 AM)

We did some spring cleaning recently and found an entire colony of black widows, in and around a bookcase. I like spiders, they are one of My totems; I also find that guard spiders and spiders who make webs on My porch and eat the skeeters that flock up there in the evenings, these are lovely, interesting, and useful creatures to have around. But these widows.. they had to get dumped in a box and taken to the other side of the yard. Like 'em because they're so damnably pretty; want 'em crawling on Me and My kids and My animals in the night, not so much.

FelineFae -> RE: Last one to post, wins. (5/13/2010 9:51:12 AM)

i'm not afraid of them, they have coolness.
Yet a friend of mine got bit by a fiddle back, poor girl. Her neck turned black and purple and scarred badly.
my kitty would try to eat them, i am afraid she'd get bit.
That's why i'd rather keep the ones with poison outside.

Been there, done that.  The genus Latrodectus actually are very easy to work with, because they do stay put and they don't bite people unless they are pressed or crushed to the skin.  Sub-1mm fangs make for very poor human epidermis penetration without physical assistance.

The US is basically out of black widow antivenom, FYI.  It's a crappy market because almost nobody gets bitten, so no drug company really wanted to pick up this orphan project.  Universities that work with this genus are importing the Bioclon product from Mexico to comply with their cover-our-asses guidelines, because the venom is pretty much biologically indistinguishable across political land borders.  Hospitals apparently don't consider their lack of stock to be a huge issue because it is actually pretty damn hard to be bitten by one, and pallative support care generally covers the admittedly quite unpleasant symptoms in most cases.

But yeah, they make nifty housepets as long as you don't physically force them to bite you.  They aren't any trouble as they basically don't go roaming.  They set up housekeeping in a convenient crevice, and if nothing disturbs them, there they remain.   Fun critters to watch, and they'll eat bugs that actually *do* bite people.

subwaythru -> RE: Last one to post, wins. (5/13/2010 10:10:31 AM)

All of this is just a diversion to make me forget about posting last.

....nice try, but no cigar, it's no use, no dice!

I win!
