It's perfecly logical. It is pretty and shiny, therefore I want it.

But you could get the same effect with just pieces of glass, no?

Not as pretty, and not as durable. The settings tend to be different (Who would waste gold on glass?) and much less nice for the glass.

It's funny: I remember learning back in grammar school that what made King Tut's burial mask so valuable to the ancient Egyptians was not the gold (of which they had plenty, apparently) but the blue glass (which was a rarity).

Well, there was a reason people decided to dig up rocks and spend hours upon hours honing them into the gems we have today. And the setting is everything with jewelry for me, if it's dull or ugly, I probably won't like it, and I love marcasite(spelling?) and fancy settings.

Once upon a time, aluminum was as precious, if not more so, then gold. Mostly, what is rare is more valuable then what is common.

Brings to mind another fun fact: The top of the Washington Monument is a 9-inch-high pyramid made of aluminum. Back then (1880s), no one had developed an economical process for smelting aluminum, so this was quite a pricy bit of metal. It was displayed in the window at Tiffany before being brought to DC.

" The statue known as Eros in Piccadilly Circus London, was made in 1893 and is one of the first statues to be cast in aluminium." According to wiki. Which personally to me looks much cooler.

I didn't know that about Eros--cool. What looks cooler?

Haven't seen dear old Eros in 20 years, so I can barely picture him.

Quite fond of the starkness of the monument; really glad they ran out of money before building the ghastly colonnade around the bottom.

Starkness isn't my deal then, I guess. I do prefer ornate architecture.

Victorian, and Art Nouveau comes to mind, but I admit, I am not an architecture buff. Art deco is still my favorite, but not always as fancy, from what I have seen. Then again, Arts and Crafts/Craftsmen is extremely pretty and can be done well simply.

No, art deco can be pretty streamlined.

I'm partial to Gothic cathedrals!

Sometimes, it can be complex and intricate, through that may be when it takes on influence from another culture moreso then when it doesn't
