"Hepatitis C drugs provide 'cure' "

" People infected with hepatitis C can be cured with existing treatments, researchers have discovered.

Standard therapy with pegylated interferon and ribavirin removed all detectable virus in 99% of patients for up to seven years.

The treatments were known to work initially but it had been unclear whether the virus would come back.

Experts said it was good news for patients but that some still suffer from painful symptoms.

Over the past decade the number of people in the UK diagnosed with hepatitis C has increased because of higher rates of testing.

But many people are still unaware they are carrying the infection.

Hepatitis C, which is contracted through infected blood, can cause cirrhosis, liver failure or cancer.

Early treatment is usually effective. "

Yes they use Interferon (not sure the spelling) it's a years course of treatment - VERY expensive and it makes you feel like death warmed over - very sick - like you have the flu all the time - weak, nausea, aching pains, etc.  Now from what i understand they add another drug to the mix to make it more effective.  There are different strains of Hep C and certain strains react better to this course of treatment - it's not an easy one to go through - it's like being on chemo for a year [:o]

I think news like these should be interpreted carefully and with a relaxed manner. Often when something potentially breakthrough has been discovered in curing tough diseases people jump up rejoycing. Often the excitement of the possibility is whelming over what actually is going to be the future. For instance, not too many years ago, meds who contained HIV infections were discovered and in the sheer rejoyce some interpreted and/or forecasted it to be a cure for the disease. That of course wasn't what it ended up to be, even though we all wished it had.  But because of it alot of people went careless about the disease which ended up in more people getting infected than otherwise.

These are of course very positive news but I'd like to see some more trials and experiments done before I profess it to be a cure.
