zindyslave -> bad pancake mix.... (5/25/2007 6:17:16 PM)

WARNING ABOUT Pancake Mix (and other boxed mixes)(may be you already know this, I DID NOT !!) Talk about frightening...Throw away ALL OUTDATED pancake mix you have in your home, PLEASE! If you don't believe me, read this article and then follow the 'Link' below to SNOPES. Sorry to be the Grim Reaper of bad news, but I would rather have you ALIVE, besides a $2.00 box of pancake mix is NOT worth your life.P. S. You might want to tell this to your children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and anyone else who keeps pancake mix in the cupboard. WARNING - READ ON. AND CHECK SNOPES TOO.

From Snopes:
I recently made a batch of pancakes for my healthy 14-year-old son, using a mix that was in our pantry. He said that they tasted "funny," but ate them anyway. About 10 minutes later, he began having difficulty breathing and his lips began turning purple. I gave him his allergy pill, had him sit on the sofa and told him to relax. He was wheezing while inhaling and exhaling.

My husband, a volunteer Firefighter and EMT, heated up some water, and we had my son lean over the water so the steam could clear his chest and sinuses. Soon, his breathing became more regular and his lips returned to a more normal color. We checked the date on the box of pancake mix and, to my dismay, found it was very outdated.

As a reference librarian at an academic institution, I have the ability to search through many research databases. I did just that, and found an article the next day that mentioned a 19-year-old male DYING after eating pancakes made with outdated mix. Apparently, the mold that forms in old pancake mix can be toxic!

When we told our friends about my son's close call, we were surprised at the number of people who mentioned that they should check their own pancake mix since they don't use it often, or they had purchased it some time ago. With so many people shopping at warehouse-type stores and buying large sizes of pancake mix, I hope your readers will take the time to check the expiration date on their boxes. Also, beware of outdated Bisquick, cake, brownie and cookie mixes. PASS IT ON! This is TRUE--Check it out!

Yeah, I heard they are recalling toothpaste, and where I work one of the cough syrups are being recalled..... Maybe I need to start growing my own things too....[:D]

Your links don't work. However, the story is available on Snopes if you look it up. They say it's true with these caveats:

It's potentially lethal only to those allergic to mold (although it occurs to Me that if you're allergic and don't know it yet, dying's a hard way to find it out...)

If the mix is sealed in plastic, foil, or wax paper, it should be safe - or at least, not deadly, if it's never been opened. If it's just in cardboard or paper, even if it's never been opened, it could STILL be dangerous. Obviously if it's been opened and used and it's past its expiration date, you should probably buy some new mix.

Not to be confused with natural Ergot fungus occuring in breads and cereals

The deaths, tremors and/or hallucinations are anecdotally linked to outbreaks of witchcraft, ghost sightings and according to wikipedia, apparently the start of the French Revolution.

Well, I seen this on Myspace so I thought I would share, I don't know all the facts but I thought it was worth sharing to keep people from getting sick.

HutchGarahl -> RE: bad pancake mix.... (5/25/2007 10:26:33 PM)

Fortunately enough for me, specially when the kids are here....food doesn't last long enough to expire.[8D]

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: bad pancake mix.... (5/25/2007 11:01:52 PM)

Thankyou for that information and I'm sorry to hear what you had to go through..same as the person above me, my kids eat up food quicker than I can buy it...I ALWAYS check dates..i'm a bit fussy about what I eat..

zindyslave -> RE: bad pancake mix.... (5/26/2007 2:24:48 PM)

Krissi, I got this story off of myspace, I didn't go through that whole mess personally, I thought that I should share it tho as it is pretty scary to think about how many of us have old pancake mix that is past its expiration date. I hate that someone had to go through that tho.

MistressSassy66 -> RE: bad pancake mix.... (5/26/2007 4:42:14 PM)

Myself and Punk had eaten some old bisquick years ago...
the coffee cake didnt rise..should have been a clue right...then it didnt taste right
we were smart enough to look and see the date was over 2 years old so we threw the whole cake...thank goodness we didnt eat more of it.
After reading the date I saw on the box it says to refridgerate after opening,so I do that always now.

This is rather alarming. i've not heard of anything similar happening before. I have now thrown out our pancake and biscuit mix. Both were outdated as my room-mate and i seldom eat such things. Thanks for sharing.
