China Presses U.S. on Food Regulations

...

Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana recently banned catfish from China after tests found traces of ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin, both in the fluoroquinolone family. The antibiotics are used to treat tuberculosis, pneumonia and other illnesses in people and prevent infections in animals.

...

On Thursday, U.S. officials asked their Chinese counterparts to increase oversight of food and drug exports. The FDA also said it was stopping all imports of Chinese toothpaste to test for a deadly chemical reportedly found in tubes sold in Australia, the Dominican Republic and Panama.

The FDA also warned consumers not to buy or eat imported fish from China labeled as monkfish because it might actually be pufferfish, which contains a potentially deadly toxin called tetrodotoxin. Eating pufferfish that contains the potent toxin could result in serious illness or death, the FDA said.

Dozens of people have died in Panama after taking medicine contaminated with a chemical traced to a Chinese company. China also was the source of the toxic chemical in pet food that has killed an unknown number dogs and cats in the United States.

And China's former top drug regulator went on trial earlier this month accused of taking bribes to approve untested medicine, including an antibiotic that killed at least 10 patients last year before it was taken off the market.

A former professor of mine mentioned that China spends 1/3 of their GNP on medical care for their citizens.

This was in 1987.

The professor pointed out that it did not seem like it would get much better in the immediate future.

(I stopped using Chinese toothpaste when I was 11....so this is not a problem for me).

Hehe!  Ya, that's what I thought too--Chinese toothpaste?

Did some more checking and it's pretty serious though.  51 people have died in Panama after using toothpaste manufactured in China, and a further 100 died after taking cough syrup.

These products were made with a syrup that was supposed to be inert, but turned out to be antifreeze.

(I stopped taking antifreeze when I was 17).

Arpig -> RE: Another Reason Not to Order Chinese Tonight (5/26/2007 5:48:25 PM)

I seriously doubt your local Chinese take-away imports much from China...its all local goods like any other restaurant

Lordandmaster -> RE: Another Reason Not to Order Chinese Tonight (5/26/2007 5:49:42 PM)

I assume everyone understands that if you order Chinese food from a restaurant in Minneapolis, that's not the same thing as importing food from China, right?

Edited to add: Fuck, Arpig got that in just as I was typing.

So what are you saying?  We're eating American cats and not ones imported from China?

dcnovice -> RE: Another Reason Not to Order Chinese Tonight (5/26/2007 5:54:03 PM)

Digesting Chinese food as I read this. If it finishes me off, would someone please keep the Things in Common thread alive? Thanks.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Another Reason Not to Order Chinese Tonight (5/26/2007 5:57:24 PM)

Well, since you ask, I'm disturbed by the tendency in this thread to lump all Chinese people into one box.  It sounds like unacknowledged racism to me.  And of course that's the most insidious kind.  Just because food imported from China has recently been found to be tainted--as though we don't have tainted food in the U.S., ha!--doesn't mean that your local Chinese restaurant is serving tainted food too.

And if you think they're serving cats, don't eat there.

That said, having been to China many times, I'm not the least bit surprised to learn that food imported from China is tainted.

Oh please. Give me a break with this over-reactive litany.  Then when you're done with that, take that stick out of your ass and shove your ugly accusations of racism in there instead; it's where it belongs with the rest of your shit.

And I assumed you would understand attempts at levity on a weekend, or do we need to run it by LROD?[;)] Good to see ya babes!

edited to add to everyone else:  I am pretty sure the racism thing was LAM's making a joke....the rest, not so sure, but you really mean those Fortune cookies that were invented here didn't come from China?

edited to also add:  On another thread someone talked about the possibility of a full moon or something making everyone get upset easily this weekend.  I have done that on other threads, but I refuse to do that when I am eating pussy..........
