TheHeretic,

I believe her point is not to paint you as a racist, it is to point out that the statements you made, placed into another context, sound suspiciously similar to the sort of propaganda espoused by the Third Reich as they embarked on the systematic genocide of a religion.

Did I say anything about driving them out of the country?  Rounding them up into camps?   Or are you now finding my assertion a tad uncomfortable and want to drag this into another topic where you get to call me a Nazi?

It's easy to die for your country.  Just join the army, go to Iraq, and someone will help you with that.

The real patriots are the ones who fight for freedom when everyone else is telling them to sit down and shut up.  When the machinery of an entire government is brought to bear in an attempt to force conformity.  When family members beg you to stop for the sake of your children.  When your friends disown you.

Who is more brave?  The solider who fights alongside his countrymen and is shot in the process, or the civil rights activist who is harassed everywhere he goes, gets beaten up in public and on television by the police, is arrested for disorderly conduct when he tries to register to vote, has his home and those of his family and friends vandalized, and eventually, is found hanging from a tree?

Not sure what you're trying to say here, 411.  Do you think civil rights conditions are better on the Islamic side?   Or are you just trying to illustrate my point about complete fucking ignorance?

.....seemed clear to me TH. Although i'd take issue with anyone claiming to be the 'real' patriots, it is the act of a patriot to oppose ones own government when they are wrong.
i believe it is possible for two patriots to disagree on foreign policy, domestic human rights or economic issues......and still both be patriots. They can both be acting in what they percieve to the best interests of their country.

Did read the word "similar" in my sentence?

I dont know you well enough to call you a Nazi, but your comments painted a wide brush over a diverse population.  There have been any number of historically relevant genocides and bigotry inflicted on people A who are different than people B. You sound upset because juliaoceania replaced the population you were bagging on with the word "Jew."

Well put.

Pastor Martin Neimoller said it best.

In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

I agree with this completely, Phil, and I don't think it matters much that we are saying these things from different countries .  It's a shared core value, a simple "fact of life."  But it isn't a fact.  That sort of freedom is kinda rare.  The people we are in a war with certainly don't believe in it.  They believe God made all the laws.  Makes petitions kinda pointless, huh?

Your conviction that our fundamental beliefs will triumph is admirable.

Actually the person we went to war against (Saddam) was not religious at all.

I doubt any one group could count as the great patriots, but I think it shows deep patriotism to repsect--and even fight for--other Americans' right to speak freely, even (or especially) what what they say drives you berserk.

I do not count myself a patriot. I despise nationalism for being the catalyst for at least one world war that killed millions of people. I think people are just people, no matter what they label themselves to be. Some are good and some are bad... it is rather easy to demonize those who disagree with you.

This quote is appropriate here

quote:

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

A succint paraphrase of my favorite quote from a french philosopher. Although I doubt the right wingers will be pleased that a frenchman wrote it first.

It makes me angry to know that there are brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives so that you are free to make inane comments like this. But that is called freedom. You will never ever approach the importance of what they have done and are doing.
You tell me of one civil rights activist who at this time was found hanging from a tree? And who is telling anyone to shut up if they disagree with the government? I see people all the time calling the President a moron and saying he lied to us. Nobody is being arrested for saying such things. What world are you in?
Easy to die for your country? How dare you.

I've had a strange thought this morning, reading the 'US troops are terrorists' thread.  It could be a result of neglecting to buy coffee when I went for the steaks and corn yesterday, but it's been percolating longer than that.

Could it be that the jews who are perfectly willing to denigrate and attack this country and administration at every opportunity, to spout filth about our troops in the field, are in fact the most convinced of the automatic superiority of the German Way?  The most confident of our invincibility?  The most optimistic that freedom is inevitable?

The Jews must believe us to be so powerful as to go to war as a divided nation.  The Jews must believe our triumph so inevitable that they can casually help the enemy propaganda campaign.  The Jews must believe so deeply in the universal truth of our values that it doesn't matter that the enemy despises them.

How unshakeable must The Jewish faith be to wail about the ones we catch needing lawyers, while refusing to acknowledge what the enemy does to captives?

Or are the Jews just completely fucking ignorant?

Ari Fleischer, then President Bush's press secretary (in)famously told a reporter who'd asked a critical question that in the post-9/11 world we all need to be careful of what we say. That comes pretty close.

And that was so chilling that no one criticizes the government anymore. Lol. Give me a break.

Fortunately, Americans' sense of freedom is hardier that the Bushies had hoped.
