School officials will use stickers to cover the yearbook photo of a high school senior wearing a collar and leash after the teen's mother complained.

Robert Richards, 19, was elected "Most Whipped" by his classmates and photographed with then-girlfriend Melissa Finley, who is holding the leash.

We all know it's only because he's black. Apparently, it's racist.

If it were a white girl collared by a black male, it would be sexist.

Pity the couple weren't white lesbians, or a black female and a white male... THEN it would be politically correct.

whoof.

and if i were a vanilla mother or school board member, i might have wondered about the implication of the term "whipped" in this case.

isn't it a shortened version of "pu**y whipped?" should that have been in there at all?

it doesn't seem inappropriate to me racially, especialy as it was all in fun, and they probably do not look at the collar and leash the way people in our lifestyle do.

if they were aware of the BDSM dynamic, would it have been more appropriate for a yearbook to have the girl administering an OTK spanking? prolly not. but if one focuses only on the racial complaints, a different depiction of D/s would be fine?

please don't get me wrong. i am all for mainstream acceptance and understanding of what it is we do. i just wonder if a school yearbook, which will edit out all instances of students raising a certain finger in class pictures, is appropriate for depicting kink.

i have said since i was young: "if there is no one around to be offended, then it is not offensive." meaning, i will cuss like a trucker with my friends, or around truckers, but if anyone starts cussing around my grandmom... no way! there is a time and a place for everything.

Actually I had not noticed his color until you brought it up. I do assume there are people like me out there...or am I the only one?

the article states that the primary complaint from the mother of the young man was that it reminded her of a promotional shot for "Roots." it goes on to focus on both sides of the argument, that being if it was racism or not.

i'm with you though. i don't notice the color issue until someone points it out. however, Lepidoptera was right. the protest would probably not hold water if the couple were of a different racial composition.

Your right. If they were of equal race it wouldn't have received so much attention. It's funny..I was at a Final fantasy concert in Hartford this past weekend. Most people could care less about a black and white couple, yet this one hispanic woman, was talking with her daughter about us. Said it was "odd" to see us together. of course they didn't know my sub, could speak Spanish.
