I see a great many Pro-Dommes on this site and I was curious about how a Female Top/Mistress/Domme (chose your preferred term) begins her career as a Pro-Domme.  How does one build a client list?  Where do you advertise?  How do you set rates?  What about prostitution and decency laws that might prohibit business?  How do you deal with safety concerns?  I'd like to know a little more about it.

What type of advice is out there for women who are interested in working in the adult industry as Pro-Dommes?

Edited to add:
If anyone would rather email me their response, you can contact me that way.  I'd appreciate any comments.

There are so many ways to go pro ... But, here's my little tip ... Ask for people to email you their advice and then use a heavy dosage of common sense as you read. This is the kind of topic that explodes into a frenzy of "pro dommes are whores" really quick when one person says the wrong thing ... Or at least, thats how I'd handle a question like this if it were me.

That's not a bad idea.  Thank you.  As for common sense, a hell of a lot of the BDSM related things I've learned had to go through that filter.  But a little reminder is appreciated.  :)

So what you're saying is that the advice 'first, you buy a shingle, and a nail to hang it from' isn't sound?

Figure out what you want to do, check that list relative to your local legal eagles, buy advertising, and flail away.

Simplistic with probably one or two shortcuts thrown in, but that should get you started.

There was a thread here on nearly the same subject a week or so ago - probably on page two by now. Plenty of other similar ones further back too.

And I'm sure in many ways it's like any other business...you probably need a county license...if you're not using your real name then you'll likely have to do the d.b.a. dance so you can operate under that name and open a bank account with that name etc.  Where will you practice?  If it's your place be sure to section off a portion of it exclusively for play space so that you can deduct that percentage of your household expenses on your taxes (rent/mortgage, depreciation, electricity, improvements, etc).  If it's elsewhere, how much space do you need, do you need to make any adjustments to the facility such as soundproofing, is that allowed?  And dont forget business cards! *g*

I would recommend some of the pro domme websites like MaxFisch.com. There are a wide variety of websites, and many of them have a dommes only section where you can ask such questions.

You need to know what you will do and specialize in, and what you will not do. Your personal limits matter so that you don't feel sleazy. Your specialties matter to set you apart. It is often said that a domme who tries to do it all palls, while one who has a specialty and does it superbly stands out. You may narrow your customer base but you are more likely to find loyal, return customers.

Acquire the wardrobe, equipment, and location. If you don't have any of that you will have a hard time having sessions and earning the money to develop your business further!

Advertise, again, on places like MaxFisch.com. Again, there are tons of pro-domme websites. A small website of your own and a banner or link listed on the advertising places will get you lots of hits.

Be prepared for time wasters. Guys who e-mail, instant message, or call and want to "negotiate" ad nauseum but never follow through by booking a session. Think about this before hand and what you might do to minimize your time expenditure.

Prostitution laws you should look up yourself. If you are in the US most states have their legal code online. Find out what the definition of prostitution is - and whether you will cross any of those lines. Ask other pro dommes in your area to find out what vice targets and what they don't, and when. Sometimes it's safe to be a pro domme until election time, and then you are a target for anyone wanting to claim they uphold family values.

Feel free to e-mail if you'd like to talk more.

MaxFisch.com is no giid unless you want half the people there to bully you,be rude or insult you for being new. id suggest all star dommes instead.
