As a (potential) poly novice who has learned alot from the CM community I am curious about the following.

There is a Colorado poly group that forces children to marry 50 yo men etc... that is getting alot of media attention because they are not Momons (so it is illegal).

Everything I have read on CM is contrary to the abhorrent child abuse happening in CO but isn't that abuse of power why the poly lifestyle is viewed negatively in mainstream USA?

I understand how ignorant (all-encompassing) this question is but what do u think went wrong in CO? There are abnormailites in the non-poly communities and we can't generalize about a specific psychopath but .....

I am just looking for some insight.

How would a woman ever agree that her young girl should marry a multi-generational pervert? What is the mentality I am missing? Does poly explain it or brainwashing?

It would be illegal even if they WERE Mormons.

Do you have a source?

The group has been on Oprah and is based in Colorado City I think. Maybe it is Utah? So ..no I do not have a source.

I guess the city has some political officials 'in the group' and the group has been allowed to grow to substantial size.

(sorry for not having specifics)

What caught my eye is the young girls who run from the group and have no clue how to function bc of the sheltered life they have led.

And I have never understood the whole Mormon/poly thing. How is that multiple marriages are allowed/recognized if it is illegal? I thought they practiced separtion of Church / state and that is where their immunity came from? I thought that is how they could 'get away with it?'

VERY strange....I will look for the info on the Net when I get a chance.

Do poly men generally see themselves as omnipotent men to be feared?? Again...I know the question is very generalized and I could use some focus of what I am asking...

Since the topic has been posted,
....FYI....

Brainwashed Brides

Dr. Phil goes inside a religious sect where young girls are reportedly forced to marry men three times their age and bear as many children as possible. On the verge of becoming child brides, two teens escaped. Now they turn to Dr. Phil for help leaving their painful past behind.

Don't miss Dr. Phil's follow-up with the teens and in-depth look at the cult airing on Tues. 5/24.

...This cult is entirely different from D/s, BDSM poly. It's motives just do not compare.

Religious cults have nothing to do with the D/s lifestyle- these girls are unwilling. They were trained to think this way.

I can honestly say that I have free will- I was never brainwashed into doing anything. I'm a sub because I enjoy it, and when I have not enjoyed it, I got out of the relationship- with no guilt or fear.

Mormons were not well regarded in the 1800's. A number of laws which to a modern eye might look unconstitutional were passed against the Mormon Church, including disincorporating it or restricting its ownership of property.

quote:

The Mormons continued to practice polygamy despite these laws, since they believed that the practice were protected by the freedom of religion clause in the Bill of Rights. To test the constitutionality of the laws, George Reynolds, Brigham Young's private secretary, agreed to be tried. In 1879 the case reached the Supreme Court, which upheld the Morrill Act: "Laws are made for the government of actions, and while they cannot interfere with mere religious belief and opinion, they may with practices."
