A blue moon is when a full moon occurs for the second time within the same month. The calendar, with the division of days into months, etc, is a strictly human invention. In times past, when there were only 10 months in the calendar, before it was revamped hundreds of years ago, blue moons would have been much more common, since the same 365 1/4 days in the year were divided into 10 months instead of 12, making the months longer and allowing more opportunity for the moon to go through its full phase twice in the same month. While almost all creatures of the world seem affected by the moon's phases to some extent, they don't check the calendar and have no way of knowing that it happened twice on this page as opposed to just once on all the other pages for the year, so it makes no difference to them. I found this info to be interesting: quote:
Note that the May 31 date applies to most of the Western Hemisphere, including the United States. In the Eastern Hemisphere, the full moon in question will occur on June 1. For that half of the world, the blue moon will be on June 30, 2007. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/bluemoon1.html So I would have to guess that it is merely the excitement of the novelty that causes people to be more aware of their moods, etc, during these events.
