Well, sort of split on this one......i have no sympathy for anyone who runs from the police, however, in this day and age, departments need to stop and think about their actions that result from pursuits. This guy put people at risk, and it was his own stupidity that got him killed. However, more and more PD's are going to no pursuit poilicies because of the fatalities involved from pursuits. Chasing someone to the death for passing a bad check, which I believe is what this was over, is simply asinine. When I worked for the Illinois State Police, I had a local municipality running 120mph thru constructions zones on 55/70 in the Metro East/St Louis area.....for a lousy package of razor blades they stole from a walgreens......it finally ended when the suspects blew the engine out of their vehicle. Unfortunately, we don't have the authority to terminate any local municipality's pursuit, it must come from their command people. Our troopers were instructed NOT to assist. Apparently, the chief of the department involved later took umbrage at the fact we failed to assist, but was advised of the no pursuit policy for retail theft. Which was ALL it was! Barely a misdemeanor...... The absolute stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me!
