my Master intends to have me get 2 tattoos. one will be a simple symbol of His inital, and the other is a certain design that will be added to each year.

i have never gotten a tattoo, and i love the intent behind these. however, i am wondering about a few things:

i know there is a risk of infection if there is not proper aftercare, or sanitization. but has anyone ever heard of an allergic reaction to tattoo ink? i have sensitive skin. i am even allergic to aloe, it gives me blisters!

the other questions is how is the tattoo affected in the long run by things like depilatories? i am hoping that once the site is healed, i will be able to use nair, until they start to put aloe in it.

this is not in the immediate future, so i have time to learn some of my options.

i did a search for tattoos and allergies, and side effects, but did not find anything in these forums. please forgive me if i am reposting an ancient thread.

A fresh tattoo is little more than an abrasion. Unless you already have a compromised immune system, it'll heal quickly if it's kept clean.

Yes, it happens. There is no regulatory agency that monitors what goes into tattoo inks and their composition can include anything from metal oxides to acrylic dyes. Unfortunately, there's no real way to tell what is in the ink going into your body because the ink manufacturers rarely disclose such info.

Once the tattoo is healed, it won't be affected by depilatories.

My understanding is that people tend to have reactions to the carrier more than the pigment. My bf had a fairly mild reaction the last time he had his back worked on that required anti-inflammatory steroids to get under control. One thing to keep in mind about allergies and sensitivities is that they can develop. What doesn't give you a reaction now may be something your body develops a sensitivity to in the future.

There is some aftercare involved, but as sfgrrl says, the actual surface of the skin isn't much more than slightly "weepy" after a tattoo. It can get infected, like any skin scrape, but it's not something I would worry a lot about.

When you pick your tattoo artist, make sure it's someone who's work you are comfortable with. You'll be wearing it for a long time. And get this done at a regular tattoo studio, where they will take the proper precautions and use sterile needles and tools.

Edited to add, you probably want to talk to your artist about your concerns, I'm sure most have probably had some experience with people who have sensitive skin.

well I went and asked the tattooist who does my tatts as regards to an adverse reaction to the ink and was told that he's never come across a reaction to the ink in all his years as a tatt artist..and he's been in the game for years.. as for anything else as has been said above .. check out the artist and make sure they have an autoclave to sterilise the needles.. and make sure that its used.. when tatt is done just sanitise often and use the apropriate cream is used.. mine heal in about 4 days..but I guess thats because of the healthy lifestyle I live (chokes)

One thing you may want to consider is asking for brand new needles. When I have my tattoos done I always ask for brand new ones. It may cost a bit more (not generally but I did have one person tell me there would be an extra charge for that if I had my tattoo done there, which I didn't) but to me it is worth the peace of mind.

Thank you everyone! This is just the sort of information i needed.

stef, MsSilvie, MasterIron, and erin- thank you all. i will definitely establish communication with the tattoo artist, and we will use it to choose the right one. and i will ask for new needles, not just for my tattoos, but for whatever tatts Master may get.

time to go to work right now, though.
