Diversity is all very well, but without some common identity and culture all one gets is islands of different peoples who happen to occupy the same country.

Where the US has always won in the past on that count is by way of its written constitution, the shared aspirations, the use of one language and a patriotism that looks odd to we Europeans but worked. Where the UK has lost post war on the same count is in its insistence that it can be all things to all peoples because perhaps it does not know what it is itself.

Well said, as is the norm for you.

America is not only not the most diverse western nations ... it is one of the least. To be included in America, you need to assimilate in to America. We aren't diverse, as much as we absorb.

That is simply not true Light hearted Maam.  Cortez brought the misionaries along, and forced conversion to Christianity was part of his goal.  Christians DO NOT Baptize animals, they fully considered the Aztecs and thier conquered peoples to be Human.  The Portugese found an inland tribe of Pygmies, deep in the rainforest, and were not sure about that one specific group.  So they captured a few and took them to the Pope, who proclaimed them human

I disagree :)  When I was a good little Catholic growing up and studied about baptism, I  baptized my cat afterward.

On the feast of St Francis, we can bring out pets to church for a holy blessing.

Anyhow, the fact remains the "explorers" biggest gig was to steal what they could, fuck the women and cram their culture down the throats of the natives.

please read your history, its the same damn europeans that killed the Great Nations, took their children away, cheated those that survived of their freedom and put them in reservations. every one of you is here illegally.  the lands were fraudently obtained. the Nations did not give anyone visas.

Without debating the accuracy of that statement, it was a long time ago. The facts as they stand in the present are, we would both be speaking either German or Japanese right now if there hadn't been both those "damn europeans" and your people (and a lot of others) here to do something about it. Those of us here now have all earned our right to stay. Get over it.

This is perhaps the one of the more rude things I have seen on CM. All I can say is wow.

Why thank you. I didn't realize I had done it so well as that. But I'm pleased that I succeeded in bringing the discussion back up to a higher level.

America it might not be perfect , but its the best there is. i'm lucky i didnt have to get in a leaky boat to get here, and once here didnt have to run when someone yelled " migra!" and if the time ever comes when it needs to be defended i will as many puerto  ricans have done since the revolutionary war. fight for it.the passion this country evokes in all immigrants is awesome.

i had to edit this. i couldnt wait till i could post again.
get over it?
i will not get over the fact that the european invasion killed so many of my people that only mitochondrial dna test can assure our lineage. that when i was ten reading webster's dictionary (in my new language ) i read Taino:extinct people indigenous to the caribbean .
look at my profile pic, do i look f***ing extinct? pretty close though. get over my people almost being decimated ?
