Considering that the normal biblical understanding (traditionally speaking) of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) the female is seen as Israel and the male as God; therefore Israel is to serve God. This is seen the best in the Song of Songs with Israel seen as the female lover to God; if you want to have a religious understanding than keeping in a broader cultural context of ancient love poetry.

Then there is the New Testament which most of the references being made to woman to be in the control of men were written in the non-Pauline texts (which most people not knowing the historical information say are Paul). And are dated (I can look it up for sure) to about 100CE or later which is after Paul’s death.

It should be taken as an allegorical relationship that people have with God; that people are married to God.
