Ok I know, it's a boring topic. But I thought maybe some of the folks here would know a better way to do this, considering that some of the people here are much better at housecleaning then I am! [:)]

As some know, I'm in college, Valyraen graduated last year and most of our friends are still in college. As such, the house gets treated like a dorm room sometimes. It's frustrating for me, but I'm not as careful as I should be about spills so I don't have room to talk.

We've also got cats and they tend to make a mess as well. I've been using Spot Shot on the carpet with great success but the can doesn't seem to last very long and 4 dollars starts adding up when you are buying it all the time.

My mother has suggested using OxyClean on the carpet, but I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions. If it matters, the stains I'm dealing with are anything from ashes, red wine, cat vomit, soda, beer, sometimes oil paint if it gets stuck to my shoe or my foot if I don't notice, and the good old fashioned mystery stain of "What is that from and how did that get there!".

I'm hoping for a cleaner that I can mix up at home in a bucket and pour out the sink if there is too much instead of something that I have to keep buying. Maybe that is too much to hope for! Anyway, thanks for reading and thanks for any suggestions anyone might have.

club soda is big, and so is shaving cream.

Look around the flea markets and see if they are selling any steamers?

Shaving cream?

Checking flea markets for a steamer is a great idea. Wonder how much those run second hand.

If you go to your nearest oric vacuum shop they have awesome little machines and cleaning system you can rent to dry clean your carpets.
Anything that wets your carpet will tend to act as a magnet for dirt until it dries.
There's a powdered product called Capture that works well for spot cleaning in between. As opposed to a spray on product like resolve, etc..)

Ok I had to laugh and check this thread....I had an email the other day from a "sub" asking if he could come be my carpet cleaner.  I don't think he was talking about the ones on my floors though.

*Giggles* I'm not surprised. But I'm talking about the ordinary carpeting found attached to floors. Generally doesn't produce arousal. At least not that I'm aware of!

(Reminds me of the guy that drove his 13 foot tall semi underneath a 12 foot 8 inch overpass...with obvious results...)

DOT, State, County, local....dudes were all scratching their heads as to how to remove this semi from the clutching grips of a much shorter overpass....and one fellow (farther down the food chain) said:

"Why don't you let some air out of the tires?"

(Get rid of the carpet).

If you're going to be there longer, then go to Home Depot and buy a few of those big area carpets.  They come in various colors and you can get a 10' X 15' section for $20-$30.  Then when you move you can either throw away the carpet or you can take it with you to your next place.  Saves you from getting hit with a carpet cleaning bill when you move.

Hydrogen peroxide cleans things quite well, as will anything with lots of oxygen in the compound. Remember those oxyclean commercials? Oxyclean is actually just sodium percarbonate. You can make the same stuff by mixing baking powder with hydrogen peroxide, and then letting the peroxide melt off to collect the crystals.

But that's not important. Mixing the two and dumping it on the stain will pretty much just make a mess, so a better idea would be to use something liquid that can just evaporate off, like ammonia.

The amounts are important. The textfile I read on this just gave you a recipe, without any ratios, so you can't "fit" it to the stain. The amounts that were given are:

1 cup of Hydrogen Peroxide
1 teaspoon of ammonia

Hydrogen Peroxide is usually sold in 3% solutions, so I'm assuming that's what they're using. Ammonia is usually sold in 5-10% solutions, however, so a good representation of a formula is impossible. For my purposes, I'm just going to say it's 7%.

5ml NH3 * .07 = .35ml Actual <=== This is irrelevant information
250ml H2O2 * .03 = 7.5ml Actual <======So is this

2% NH3 (ammonia) Solution
98% H2O2 (Hydrogen Peroxide) Solution

The molar ratios for this would be so whacked out, I'm not even going to attempt them. Just multiply the percentages by the amount that you have set out to use.

Also, I need a hobby.
