ORIGINAL: justheather It is illegal to take benzo's without a prescription. The drug itself isn't illegal (if prescribed). As opposed to cocaine or something of that nature, which is illegal in and of itself and cannot be prescribed that I know of. She said she had xanax prescribed to her a while back. What happens if a doc prescribed it a long time ago and she never finished the bottle? And one night a year later she felt anxiety and took one of the ones she had left. Is that illegal? Is there a certain time frame in which you must consume them? Does it become illegal to take a xanax you had left from a prescription in the past? If so, do they post a legal warning on the bottle? Just curious. I did a brief stint as a Staff Developer and was in charge of pre employment drug testing. In Massachusetts, at the facility I worked at the procedure was to ask the candidate if they were taking any medications and to list them on the form. IF any of these medications were controlled substances, such as Xanax, Vicodan, Valium etc, they had to provide me a current prescription bottle for them. I am not sure if it was the facilities policy or the drug screening policy, but I had to photograph the prescription bottle and verify it's legitamacy with the pharmacy. To answer your question, is there a certain time frame that the med needs to be consumed by, the answer is generally no. If some one is prescribed a medicine " as needed", it is completely feasable that they may have a bottle of medicine for a year and only have taken a few doses. I think that also answers your subsequent questions. mbmbn Thank you, that does answer my question. As I was thinking about what Heather had said about the drug having to be prescribed to be legal, it occured to me that alot of people never finish it out. And often the bottle will say "take as needed" rather than "take 3 per day" for instance. So it's feasible that someone would have some left over from a year or two ago. While it may lose potentcy or whathaveyou, I would think that it's legal to take it as long as it came out of the prescribed bottle. Great info, thanks.
