It has struck me in the many and varied discussions on these fora regarding universal health care in the USA that one major strand of objection has been the notion that it enshrines a process where some will pay in and not get any benefit, while others get far more out of the system than they pay for.
Do those who espouse this idea also support the idea of tolls for all roads, so that no-one has to pay for a service they don't use?

Has no one ever told you that its impolite to pick holes in peoples' arguments?

But its a good point. I dont have need for the police very often yet I pay every month. I never visit the library these days, yet I contribute. And which screw on that Eurofighter is mine I wonder?

... Hmm...

The American hospital system is allready on a system where people pay for services recieved by others. This usually shows up in emergency rooms, the only place where the unemployed and homeless can get medical care. More preventative care would (in theory) reduce these emergency costs.

The American economy can't take any taxation on it's roads, It's the primary infrastructure that we use to move from place to place. There's not enough public transportation, and we're too spread out to be able to take a road tax without massive changes to our way of life here.

When Police are doing their job, you should never know they are there. A police force that is worth the tax money keeps the crime down and resolves crisies quicky and with a minimum of impact on everyone else. The military is a similar thing; If they're doing their job, you should never notice it in your day-to-day life.

Libraries are a repository of knowledge and art. To pay for public libraries is one of the ways that we as a society encourage learning and education. Now I'll agree that libraries need to be updated to get with modern technology and update to be available to modern society, but I can't quite convince myself that funding public access to Libraries is not worthwhile.

Dauric.

I think you are scheduled to join the mile-high club next tuesday, with the Wing Commander and the squad leader...

...oh...that isn't what you meant?  My bad...

"It's the same thing," he said.

Depends on how we define 'using' a service, I suspect.

Is the health care system preventing some contagious disease from infecting even people who never go to a doctor?

Is the roadway enabling the fire department to travel and put out the fire in the apartment next to someone who never sets foot on that road?

Even those who gain secondary benefit may be considered liable to support the systems that benefit the group.

Now did, we want to talk about paying for wars that benefit no one?

The people who are insured already pay a hidden tax in the form
of higher deductables and increases in prescriptions.
