"Roller coaster scare leaves riders hanging"
  Posted, 8:42 p.m., EDT, June 10, 2007

" HOT SPRINGS, Arkansas (AP) -- A dozen riders on a roller coaster spent half an hour hanging upside down -- 150 feet above the ground -- after a power outage shut down the attraction.

It took about 30 minutes for the city fire department to rescue the riders using a ladder truck Saturday evening, said Aundrea Crary, spokeswoman for the Springs & Crystal Falls amusement park.

Spectators cheered when the riders were brought to the ground from the highest point of a loop on the X-Coaster, but one passenger threw up after reaching safety.
The X-Coaster was one of several rides brought to a halt by the outage that originated somewhere near the park.

"You could tell who got off the (X-Coaster) because their faces were red," said Angela Salter. She was riding the Gauntlet, another coaster, and said park employees worked quickly to free her.

The park resumed normal operations, although the X-Coaster remained closed.
One X-Coaster passenger, Jay Plummer, 37, was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Medical Center in Hot Springs after complaining of neck pain and a headache.

"It was very scary," said his girlfriend, Connie McBride. "I love the amusement park, but I will never get on the X-Coaster again."

The park has experienced outages before, but usually they last only seconds, said Dan Aylward, Magic Springs president and general manager.

Entergy Corp. was investigating but crews found no faulty wiring.

"The cause could be a (tree) limb or as simple as an animal (on the lines)," said Mark Hunt, general manager of customer service for Entergy. "We could find no faults, but we are going to continue to investigate until we find the cause."  "

I think that amusement parks need back-up generators for rides such as rollercoasters to prevent this type of situation.

I got stuck on one for a few minutes once...but I'd be freaked out upside down, amazing no one fainted.

Yup, the upside down part is what makes it so bad; nausea, vomiting and fainting being the most likely outcomes.

looks like fun, where do i sign up for a ride like that?

LOL, I hadn't seen this yet.  This is in my hometown.  My first job was at that amusement park when I was 16.  I was a ride operator.  I remember operating the Ferris Wheel and it getting unbalanced.  It started going the opposite direction and the motor burned out.  People got stuck in it for hours.  The park actually changed owners in the last 10 years.  I was told a lot of improvements were made since then.  I certainly hope so, because it was falling apart when I worked there in 1991.

Ehh...cheap owners!  I worked at a movie theatre where the out-dated and poorly maintained
popcorn machine caught on fire.  We spent an evening cleaning up the mess.

Sounds like one hell of a bondage experience. I wonder how many people pissed their pants.

I'll tell you what, I got a pretty good dose of acrophobia and I might've told them to just leave me there until the power came back on. Getting relesed and some firemen need to grab my lard ass, I would be asking just how long would the power be out, and could they get me a beer. I guess it would be a trip drinking it upside down.

I was under the impression that during certain part of the rollercoaster ride the drive chain was disngaged. There are some with a freefall phase, or it this simply putting the motor into float mode ? The chain would add greatly to the mass of the cars, and I think they avoid collisions with another mechanism. At least the really killer ones.

So they should've been able to disengage it and get it down. There should be a better alternative than a high rise rescue with a ladder sticking up from a fire truck. Or it's possible that if disengaged it was not safe to ride down without brakes, something like that.

Quick, get a neurosurgeon, three engineers and a lawyer, I think we can get a government grant if we act fast.

Some years back, hubby, I, and our two kids were on the Space Mountain roller coaster in Disney World, when it stopped half way through the ride. We were stuck there for about 20 minutes. The ride is in total darkness, but they turned the lights on while we were stuck. It sure does lose its mystery when you see the place lit up. Luckily, our car was only tilted a little to the side; some folks were stuck hanging WAY over to the side.

They got it moving again, and brought us down. As consolation for our inconvenience, they offered any of the riders that wanted to ride again, a straight to the front of the line pass. So, we immediately rode it again. *L*

Why, thank you hunkboy!  [:D]

Just another reason for me to AVOID rollercoasters at all costs. Hanging upside down for a few minutes gives me horrible headaches, I can't imagine what those poor people were going through, besides praying.
