I love Big Love. Purchased the first season on DVD. I didn't like all the sex scenes but the second season seems more intense. There's a story underneath it. I also like the dynamics of the wives. Each have their own personalities. So, I will be watching every Monday.

They visit the compound.  You'll love it.  Get your dress whites ready!

i love Big Love!!! have watched every episode and all the little "extras" you get on HBO ondemand. it actually makes polygamy look appealing to me, because it's done with a higher purpose in mind (reaching the celestial kingdom). Nikki is my favorite, because i think she takes the whole purpose of the marriage more seriously than the other wives. i don't care for Barb at all...she just comes across as selfish and divisive, imo.

also re: the legal angle, polygamy is illegal. even though only the marriage with Barb is legally recognized, that doesn't prevent the law from recognizing the whole situation as a polygamous marriage. in the eyes of the law all polygamous families are criminals, however most wouldn't be prosecuted unless they were also committing some other crime, such as child abuse/molestation, or welfare fraud. OR unless they were public figures with a lot to lose, like Bill Henrickson.

My question, though, in order for it to be found illegal, wouldn't Bill have to have a civil (legally binding) ceremoney with Nikki and Margene?  Otherwise, it's just relationships outside of the marriage (adultery).

Anyway, Nikki is my favorite, far and away.  I was surprised to find out that she did marry Bill for love, I always thought she had.  So it surprised me to find that she questions the entire marrying-for-love thing.  I see Nikki has very no-nonsense in her dealings with everyone, When something needs done, she digs in and takes care of it.  She is also my favorite character.  But then I think Chloe is a beautiful woman, in general.

Anyway, it's nice to have more posters here for discussion!

Katy, actually no, no civil ceremony is necessary. the polygamy laws apply to "cohabitation" as well as religiously sanctioned plural marriages. for the past few years the FLDS pro-polygamy community has been battling to de-criminalize polygamy, so that people can no longer be prosecuted or penalized for being in a poly relationship.

and i agree with you, i think Chloe Sevigny (sp?) is gorgeous as well, always have. although my Master likes the woman who plays Barb the best...he claims she was super hot about 15 yrs ago.

Thanks for the info, I did not realize that, I guess now we know why they keep saying it's illegal.

I never thought that Nikki married for love. You could tell she was strict principle at least for me. So it didn't come as a surprise that she questioned his love. She was brought up by the "prophet" where multiple wives is and was a way of life. Nothing was done for love. It was done for procreation. I have to say I believe Nikki is very beautiful, but I don't like her at all. I have to say I like Barb. Bard is completely knows how to play her role as 1st wife and she does it so very well. I also like Margene because she is finding her voice and her place.

I watched last year and loved it.  It was new and refreshing.  This year it seems the writing and the plot line are much more intense and they keep you wanting to come back next week.  I did not enjoy Nikki's character last year as I felt she was very selfish and deceitful.  This year, the writers are doing a much better job with her character and I actually felt for her last week when they had to abruptly leave the compound.  I also enjoyed the part where Nikki talked about marrying for love vs. marrying for the commitment.  I don't seem to like Barbs character too much this season.  And Margene is really beginning to take ownership of her role in the family, not to mention take charge when necessary.  (Dealing with the Wanda incident.)  Great show with great writing this year!

Okay, as of tonight Im up to date on the episodes and Ive seen all the extras on-demand. I wont be able to watch this week's episode until later in the week but I just LOVE how the character development has really blossomed this season. Im digging this show even more this season than I did last. I feel like when I watch it Im transported to their world...and to me, that is a sign of a good story.
It is exciting that the concept of poly is being introduced to mainstream America through these characters. It seems like last year the writers really wanted us to identify with Barb and now that we like her, they are presenting some interesting and integral poly issues...and we are watching and relating to these people because the issues they have are the exact same ones that face any relationship.
It's just a darn good show.
Katy, next time you come up to WNY we are going to play Juniper Creek and put on our Best Whites and have a group picture taken :-).

you really feel like the writers wanted to make Barb likeable and relatable? that's funny because i've disliked her from the very beginning, she's just so selfish and flighty. she doesn't seem to care about the principle at all, and if she had her way she'd be the only one married to Bill and the other wives and all the children who she didn't give birth to could go fly a kite. i REALLY started detesting her when during that period when she and Bill had that "affair" last season, although he was foul for that one too. and then for her to accept a nomination for Mother of the Year, knowing the huge risks to her family, just the epitome of self-centeredness. that actually made me happy for her humiliation at the Mother of the Year ceremony, although i was devastated for the rest of the family.

although this season her character seems to be more focused on the family (so far), i hope that continues.
