"Researchers seek DNA link to Lost Colony"

Mon Jun 11, 5:12 PM ET

" ROANOKE ISLAND, N.C. - Researchers believe they may be able to use DNA to uncover the fate of the Lost Colony, which vanished shortly after more than 100 people settled on Roanoke Island in 1587.

Using genealogy, deeds and historical narratives, researchers have compiled 168 surnames that could be connected to settlers in what is considered the first attempt by the English to colonize the New World. The team will try to trace the roots of individuals related to the colonists, to the area's 16th century American Indians or to both.

"The Lost Colony story is the biggest unsolved mystery in the history of America," said Roberta Estes, owner of DNA Explain, a private DNA analysis company based in Brighton, Mich.

The company is working with the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research, an independent research group based in Washington, N.C., that is working to figure out what happened to the colony settled 20 years before Jamestown.

"I don't know what we'll find in the end," Estes said. "Part of the big question for me is, did the Lost Colony survive? Who is their family today? And where did they go?"

Fred Willard, director of the Lost Colony center, said some colonists may have migrated inland to what are now East Lake, Chocowinity and Gum Neck. Researchers plan to use cheek swabs taken from possible ancestors to test the paternal and maternal DNA lines.

"In our case, with the Lost Colony, the only way we're going to trace who was who and if they survived is to use DNA," Estes said.

While DNA will not make any immediate connections beyond living relatives, the samples can provide clues to an individual's country of origin and other shared family traits, Estes said. Genealogy will have to fill in the blanks.
Researchers may also try to test American Indian remains or known relatives of the colonists in England.

More than 100 people settled on Roanoke Island in 1587, but the colonists vanished sometime between August of that year and 1590, when their governor returned to the island from a trip to England. "

Ooooo...

Wait.

My father's grandparents emigrated from Europe in the early 1800s and after doing the cowboy thing in Colorado they homesteaded in central California in 1870.

My mother's grandparents wandered west with Brigham Young.

Damn.  Im not a Lost Colonist.

You mean that Brigham Young never got lost in the Utah wilderness?

Define lost.

He decided that the Mormon promised land was around the Great Salt Lake.  A place of limited agriculture, hellishly cold in the winter, and in the rain shadow of the Rockies.

Which is not to say I have not enjoyed my time in Salt Lake, but I can think of hundreds or thousands of places that qualify as "promised land" a lot more than Utah does.

I think my great grandfather had the right idea by homesteading in San Luis Obispo.  One of my favorite places in the world.

alright then, this slave will ask Master's permission to submit her cheek swab...

seriously though, it would really help to explain the broken limb on the family tree that dead-ends somewhere around 1650 on an island off the coast of VA...with a strain of blond/red haired-blue eyed folks who speak English...

Define lost.

Well, you have physically lost as in not knowing your location and "emotionally lost" as in not knowing
how you feel and "mentally lost" after too many drinks and "spiritually lost" if you leave the church and...

He decided that the Mormon promised land was around the Great Salt Lake.  A place of limited agriculture, hellishly cold in the winter, and in the rain shadow of the Rockies.

So it is pretty to look at and terrible for farming?
However did they survive the winters?

Which is not to say I have not enjoyed my time in Salt Lake, but I can think of hundreds or thousands of places that qualify as "promised land" a lot more than Utah does.

Sure, good farm and ranch land, plenty of water and a milder climate.

I think my great grandfather had the right idea by homesteading in San Luis Obispo.  One of my favorite places in the world.

yes, very!!!  this slave is a California Native---but only a first generation native.

this slave's ancestors didn't make it to the Central Coast of California until Camp Cook was being turned into Vandenberg Air Force Base---1960-ish.  Before that, they inhabited areas of the eastern seaboard, specifically NJ, MD and VA and got there before the Revolutionary War.

will let you know how the swabbing goes!!!

Edited to add: (Merc PS)

PS -
It was great to meet you Sunday. Let us know when you'll be back in the neighborhood. I don't think we'll be able to get to the Labyrinth Ball because we already have a SF on the calender at the end of this month. Keep us posted regarding the SLO Munch. It will give us a good excuse to go back to beth's old stomping grounds and have a Santa Maria BBQ dinner at McLintock's.

beth, what a fascinating story!  I love geneology research and digging
around in old archives looking for clues.  If you have old photographs
those are great for afternoon storytelling too.

Merc, too bad about the Labyrinth but know how you have to pace
yourself with all the summer fun.  Will send you mail about the
local munches and events.

Take care both of you,

Vendaval
