"When a Woman Smells Best"
by Sara Goudarzi, Special to Live Science

The scent of a woman is more attractive at certain times of the month, suggests a new study that had men sniffing women's armpit odor.

"We were interested whether armpit odor changes across menstrual cycle," said study author Jan Havlieek of the Department of Anthropology at Charles University, Prague. "To test this, we asked a group of women to wear cotton pads in their armpits for 24 hours."

The women didn't wear perfumes, use deodorants, eat spicy or smelly foods, smoke, drink alcohol or use hormonal contraceptives such as the pill. Body odor was collected during three phases: menstrual (at the beginning); follicular (between the first day of menstruation and the onset of ovulation); and luteal (the fertile stage).

"The fresh pads were subsequently rated for their attractiveness and intensity by a group of 42 men," Havlieek told LiveScience.

The most attractive smells, men said, were from the time between the first day of menstruation and ovulation. "

"The Sexy, Healthy Scent of a Man"

"Stinky T-shirts"

" In 1996, Claus Wedekind, a zoologist at Bern University in Switzerland, conducted what's become known as the stinky T-shirt study. Wedekind had 44 men each wear a t-shirt for two nights straight, then tested how women reacted to the smelly shirts.

Like mice, women preferred the scent of men whose immune systems were unlike their own. If a man's immune system was similar, a woman tended to describe his T-shirt as smelling like her father or brother.

Since then, companies have developed pheremone-based perfumes and cologns, with promises of increased sexual attraction. Researchers don't agree on their effectiveness.

More research is needed to figure out how and to what extent a woman's nose leads her to sex, and how adept she is at picking a healthy partner.

"We cannot rule out that other parts of the human nose are able to detect the peptides," Frank Zufall said. "We can now ask whether these peptides are present in human secretions such as sweat and saliva, whether they can be detected by the human nose, and if so, whether they have any influence on our own social behavior." "

The smell of a man AFTER he has had a work out, before he showers will make me go ga-ga. That's when a man smells like a 'man' or after a hot and sweaty session, that time just cuddling contemplating a hot shower together is so arousing.

As fo the article on women, I have heard that stuff for years, its suppose to be primal, with men 'detecting' when a female is the most fertile for procreation; kinda fun if you ask me. Those primal urges and desires come to the forefront when we least expect them.

I notice that different people are either attractive or not to me, based on their body chemistry and not the fake perfume aromas, etc.  And my own body smells different at various point in my cycle.  A previous boyfriend could tell by my body scent that my menstral cycle was soon to arrive.  Interesting how many of our biological mating clues are so subliminal and not immediately obvious as the visual clues.

This is one of my favourite subjects! I notice definite differences in smell between male and female - even after bathing and prior to chemicals being applied. Apparently, I smell like a woman too, which must indicate that much of it is down to hormones - not that I ever had any particular smell as far as I know, beforehand. I'm one of those people who can take a bath/shower once a week, and still not stink! Though that may have more to do with British weather and my apparently poor circulation, which means I'm cooler than most, quite naturally.

To pick up on the menstrual cycle thing - yes, I do notice a change of smell in women occasionally, though its a little rude I think to go asking about the cause alleged here!

Whats also interesting I find, is that women only smell in the way mentioned after about 15 and up until about 45-50, in other words, their fertile years.

Similar applies to men though - they develop this oily smell in their late 40s, which is not quite the same as attractive!

Well, Miss Venezuela is pretty damned attractive to me, and I've never smelled her underarms.

Besides beauty, what special talents does she possess that makes her so appealing to you, LAM?

I agree about the church. NO single human practice or mindset has been as destructive and pointless as raving and killing 'servants of God'  Secularlism is the dawning of day for the species. In Mexico , abuse of powerand wealth by the church ( I live and study volcanoes in Mexico ) resulted in a general house cleaning in an insurrction. And priests found themselves facing firing squads. It should have been a wake up call for Rome and papal clothes hounds. A big garage sale of Vatican properties migh feed and clothe the urchins I see in rural Mexico. IN the Army - I am a vet- chaplins routinely gave sanction to mayhem and killing of perfect strangers by us. I ditched the Army and religion with gusto!

I'm don't particularly find anything attractive about the smell of someone sweaty either.  I don't know why, but I love the smell of cocoa butter or certain suntan oils on a woman.  That smell just really turns my crank.  It's been rare that I have met a woman that had a disagreeable body odor.  I have met women that had horrible breath, and that is always a turn-off.  This one woman I dated briefly brushed her teeth and flossed regularly, but her breath always smelled horrible for some reason.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Scent of attraction, female and male phermones (6/14/2007 9:17:50 AM)

No idea.  I've never met her.  That was kinda the point--sometimes men are just attracted to what they see.

Human beings do not emit phermones.

In fact, Humans have been masking the smell of sweat (and other body oders) since the dawn of civilazation. Some of the oldest manmade objects are containers for purfumed oils And in pre-civilized man, there is overwhelming evidence to show that humans used sents to adorne their bodies.

slaverosebeauty -> RE: Scent of attraction, female and male phermones (6/14/2007 9:28:40 AM)

Am I the only one likes the smell of a hot sweaty man?? Say it ain't so. Then again I am attracted to 'manly men;' those pheramones drive me nuts, and the closer to ovulaiton the worse it gets.  Maybe thats why my guy friends volunteer to help me move stuff in the heat, lol.

After a man gets out of the shower he smells yummy too, especailly if we get to shower together; but that primal scent is intoxicating. {goes to take a cold shower}

Using a brain imaging technique, Swedish researchers have shown that homosexual and heterosexual males respond differently to two odors that MAY be involved in sexual arousal, and that the gay males respond the same way as women. The two chemicals in the study were a testesterone derivative produced in male's sweat and an estrogen-like compound in women's urine, both of which have lonf been suspected of being pheromones. The estrogen-like compound, though it activated the usual smell-related regions in women, lighted up the hypothalamus in males. This is a region in the central base of the brain that governs sexual behavior and, through its control of the pituitary gland lying just beneath it, the hormonal state of the body.

Yep we have them. How else do you explain attraction?? Its chemical, its pheramones, its a mix of things. Pheramones are the bodys NATURAL perfume and scent.

That is EXACTLY what I am talking about. You walk by him a few times as he does yard work JUST for the thrill and to see how strong your self-control is. Not exactly the most submissive thing to want to rip your partner's clothes off, but, it works.

philosophy -> RE: Scent of attraction, female and male phermones (6/14/2007 10:09:52 AM)

...indeed...and pheremones are surely involved in the well known phenomenon regarding women living together and their menstrual cycles synchronsing together.

It ought to be pointed out to those to whom this is a new subject, that pheremones are not the same as smells. They are volatile and effective chemicals produced in tiny quantities by our own bodies.....they may be present in sweat, but they're not the same thing as sweat.

Totally! In the same study, the male sweat chemical, on the other hand, did just the opposite; it activated mostly the hypothalamus in women and the smell-related regions in males.

Edited to add: eXcellent! with this post I'm now "Twisted" :)

dawntreader -> RE: Scent of attraction, female and male phermones (6/14/2007 10:16:56 AM)

For me, there is a distinct difference when a man's body temperature elevates and enhances his scent and when he is dripping sweat. Sweat is one of the ways the body releases impurities and i for one have no desire to lick, taste or smell someone elses wet toxins.  Especially around the balls...nope, big turn-off there. Ofcourse, i love giving sensual baths so i am all for positive solutions[;)]
