Jerusalem Undivided
A changing mind-set among the city's Palestinians
By Larry DerfnerPosted 6/3/07 JERUSALEM—In his small grocery store just off Sultan Suleiman Street, which runs past the Old City's Damascus Gate and through the Arab side of downtown Jerusalem, a Palestinian merchant grumbles about the hardships and indignities under Israeli rule. His complaints are long-standing among Palestinians here, yet the reality for him and others is shifting in response to the violence and economic hopelessness of Palestinian Authority rule in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. "There is no safety there," he says.

As a result, the merchant has given up on what has long been the dream and demand of Jerusalem's Palestinians: to see the city redivided, with the Arab side—which Israel seized from Jordan in the 1967 Six-Day War—becoming the capital of a Palestinian state. "Gaza should be for Palestine, the West Bank should be for Palestine," he says, "but Jerusalem should stay like it is." On this, he is not alone.

the events per Palistians are alarming.

we set back the clock many years- by meddling in the mideast.

bloodshed is sad. [no matter where it occurs]

the way the US gives special treatment to Isreal, no wonder the Arabs feel disconteent with the west.

Dont misunderstand. An Isreal State MUST exist. it just seems that by invading/freeing Iraq; we give carte blanche to Isreal and others to possibly play ball unfairly.  I dont live there- never been there. but pulease. cant y'all get along????????!!!!!

BTW- all foriegn enitites that have spies and lobbiest in Washington, it is out of control. Go home.

A car jacker issnt going to car about a speeding ticket. [or back child support, or an over due electric bill]

I have no answeres- the Jews and Arabs have faught for thousands of years. I do wonder that US financial support fans the flames.

Why cant both peoples live in harmny???

WHY?!!

Send your children to be suicide bombers- that is ludicrist. GET OVER IT!!!!   {but} you wont. you will continue the bloodshed- and it of course is teh fault of the other side.   On that premise- Ild say there is plenty of guilt to go around.

What a terrible nonfuture you leave to your children. Your children deserve better.

Cutting off your nose to spite your face.....

considerring your cultures- --I am so lucky to be a westerner.

Even if it is shallow, materialistic and currupt.

*steps off soap box*

.....is this the desired result of the last few years of US policy in Israel?

I'm hearing people talking about how much easier life would be if the Gaza strip was Egypt's once again.
