Just how safe is breath and knife play? They both sound dangerous to me though I've tried neither. For those Doms/Masters that list these two things as their interest are they warning bells to avoid?

I'm really concerned about this and not even sure how breath play is done. Choking I would assume?

Maybe someone can shed some light on these areas of interest that so many have checked.

Thank You

This is the actual definition of breath control:
Breath control is used to include any game involving control or restriction of oxygen to the brain, whether by interfering with the breath directly or through pressure on the carotid arteries supplying oxygenated blood to the brain. The sexual interest in this has been named asphyxiaphilia and when carried out as a solo scene it is labelled auto-erotic asphyxiation.
Yes, it can be very dangerous. I have seen that a lot of the Master/Mistress's check this as an interest. I wouldn't go as far as to say that you need to stay away from them, just make sure you know the person, and if you don't want to do it, make sure they know it is a hard limit for you.

Ummm safe enough that they can and are done regularly without harm, dangerous enough that a mistake could make things go real bad real fast.

Knife play isn't the same as blood play and I actually put it pretty low on the risky things. Suspension and needles are things I consider riskier than knives, to give you an idea of my heirarchy.

Breath play can be done a few ways- you can shove them underwater so they have to hold their breath, you can choke them (this is choking play, not specifically breath play and requires more knowledge of physiology), or you can cover their mouth and nose.

Generally, you don't want them to pass out, because you can't see how far gone they are after that point and most people in the scene are not in physical top condition to be able to handle that well. Broken blood vessels are generally bad as well. If you have a headache afterwards, you probably went farther than is healthy.

But, as with fire play, do NOT try doing this just after reading some online posts. Find someone experienced with it to start showing you some techniques. Decide for yourself what's an acceptable risk and what isn't.

They are dangerous. The danger is, of course, part of the attraction. Submitting to such play is (well, assuming you're not just clueless) a real show of trust.

It's possible for someone who is careful and practiced and knowledgable to do some pretty scary things with a knife with little real danger. Of course, one little slip...

Simply being interested in these things is hardly a warning sign. Being willing to do them carelessly, now that would be a big red flag...

We do knife play and it is quite fun. But then again, I have been married to my Domm for 14 years.
Would I do it with a complete stranger ? never!
Like someone said above, knofe play is relaly low on the risk leval.. most of the knifes are not real sharp but can be made to feel very very sharp buy putting in a feezer or whatever. I never know which one Sir is going to use which make sit more fun!

I can make a quick and firm squeeze on your throat (hell, even just hold it firmly without doing more) and I can take a knife and bury it in a table while you are tied..................and tell you something on the order of "If you move one F********* thing in the least..............

so long as you believe it in the moment........

So, it ain't always a matter of asphixiating you or slitting you asshole to shoesole..............
as we men are fond of saying when we got a present late and it's worthless...........

Well honey, it's the thought that counts...........
Your edge is my center,

Ron

*shivers at the thought*

I wanted to thank You all for your comments on this subject. For now I do believe both are a limit of mine. Not to say that one day with the right Master once trust has been reached that I might not cross those boundaries.

Anyway thank You for your comments.

I've done cutting and feeding with a dom which was very intense and of course dangerous. Some of the time tho there would be knives involved without any cutting at all. blindfolding me and feeling a cold knife slide between my breasts to my clit. Digging in a bit with the blunt edge of the knife made me so jumpy. I trusted him enough that I let him cut before but sometimes he would rip off my blindfold and I'd see him with the knife raised as if he would stab me. He'd bring it down and then stop before touching my skin and maybe drag it up to my neck. Mmmmmm. I miss that. I'm gonn have to mention that to my boyfriend. It was so scary the adrenaline was incredible. Even tho I didn't think he would kill me or anything just this look in his eye bringing that knife down would make me sooo wet. Once dragging a dull blade over my neck, nipples, and stomach I came without my pussy being touched.
On breath play. I love being choked to where I can only take very light ragged breaths. There is less panicking than cutting off air totally. BUt I cum so fast being fucked and choked at the same time. When you feel like ur entire body will explode w/out air everything is more sensitive and feels amazing. Think the effects of tit-binding without the pain of the rope. I've never really passed out but in some solo play I've put a belt around my neck (standing up) and pulled on it myself until blood vessels in my eyes started to pop a bit. I took the belt off then and my muscles were like rubber. I had no control for about a minute and I just collasped. It was totally incredible. Safe gestures are very great for these things. Like a bike horn in a hand as a safe sound if muscle control is low or you can't speak.
Both are certaintly dangerous and require immense trust and understanding. With experience tho, on many levels, most edge-play can be very fun and add in otherwise vanilla encounters even. A lot of my sex is rough sex with some choking and a bit of verbal humiliation.
Good luck everyone!

I'm pretty sure there have been several threads on breath play. It's extremely dangerous--one of the most dangerous things you can do, in fact--because you can't really be sure exactly when someone is going to have a heart attack. I do it, so I'm not part of the Safety Brigade, but you have to be aware of the risks. I think it's insane to do any kind of breath play with a noose or gibbet, because all you need is one thing to go wrong and you're on trial for homicide. The only thing that touches the throat is my hand.
