I've been working on a sturdy locking collar design and while I have a nice, functional, adjustable closure already worked out, it requires a padlock to be fastened.  The problem with the padlock hanging from the collar is that it just kinda seems a bit clunky and cumbersome.  I'd ideally like to stay away from the set-screw approach and while I could fabricate my own more aesthetic flush-mount lock, it would be more extra work to do so than I'd like.  I'm wondering if anybody has any suggestions for specific existing locks that I should check out.  The only thing I've been able to think of so far is trying to find either a much smaller padlock (which probably also means a dramatic reduction in durability) or something somewhat similar in function to one of those little diary locks, but a little larger and much more robust (which I haven't been able to locate yet).

Possibley one of the locks that are used with chasity belts may work? Seems to be a commercial grade locking mechanism, something like what vending machines use.  Neosteel chasity belts use them for sure

I believe they generally use a system with padlocks also, though the Neosteel clasps look like they at least keep the lock in a more fixed position.  They do have what appears to be a non-padlock clasp, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for and seems to be specially fabricated for them anyway.

I appreciate the suggestion, though.

Definitely closer to what I was thinking of.  Luggage locks usually tend not to be as strong as what I'm going for, but I'll have to pursue that route a bit more to see what I can find.

Any other ideas as well?

Depending on how far you would accept the lock to protrude, modifying a car wheel lock could be decorative, and require a special tool for removal. An alternative design that would be flush mounted would be to use a cabinet lock. You can find them in woodworking catalogs. Sewing the mechanism (or reveting) would secure the locking mechanism, then sewing or reveting a metal recepticle for the pin would secure the closure. Depending on the design the profile of these locks are about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch thick and can be quite strong.

Someone made me a metal collar where they welded a small brass padlock directly on to the collar. They cut the hasp (is that the word?) so it is just a straight horseshoe that passes through a metal projection welded to the other side side of the collar. This means that the lock sits horizontally rather than hanging vertically, and it stays shut just fine. If that's of interest, and I haven't decribed it properly, I might be able to send you a photograph of it. It's quite a neat way to do it.

Hmmmmm...  Also good suggestions. 

I'll have to see what kinds of cabinet locks I can find, to see if any would work for what I'm trying to accomplish.
The separated padlock idea sounds like it would have decent functionality to it, but is a little less "refined" than what I was hoping for.

Yeah, I know...I'm picky.  I do appreciate the feedback, though.

I have a padlock that has been chromed. It looks very striking. Or you could weld some sort of medallion on to it - if the other suggestions don't work

The locks that I already have been using are about that size.  They just have the solid brass square body instead of plated zinc.
I will have to look around that site, though.  Thanks.

There isn't really a problem with the small padlocks that I've been using for the collars.  I'm just being picky about it.  The matching cuffs are wider, so the padlocks are less of a visual issue, but my preference would be to find something with a cleaner look and less of a profile for the back of the collar.

Awesome work, there is some patients a work there. It seem to that if you're talented enough to put together your own chainmail then you can also fabricate your own lock. Have you considered fabricating your own lock? Something similar to a car seatbelt mechanism.

I've considered fabricating my own lock and I may end up doing so, because I can't find anything that would both work the way I want and look the way I want.  (despite the great suggestions)

It'll just be a lot of extra work to put into a simple collar.  It would jack up the price a little too.  Maybe I'll just have to finish the solid collar design and work on a discreet one as well, so I can have a few different things available.
