Va. School's No-Contact Rule Is a Touchy Subject

Fairfax County middle school student Hal Beaulieu hopped up from his lunch table one day a few months ago, sat next to his girlfriend and slipped his arm around her shoulder. That landed him a trip to the school office.

Among his crimes: hugging.

years ago, a parent came to enjoy "movie time" at school, with his daughter.  she was in kdg.  during the movie, a little boy was sitting behind his daughter, and playing with her long hair.  this dad made such a ruckus, screaming in the halls about his daughter being "violated", we even heard it in the cafeteria.

this ended with the police being called and the dad removed from the school, his child being embarrassed as hell, and the little boy being subjected to many questions, when all he did was play with a little girls ponytail, mindlessly, as he watched a cartoon movie.

sadly, common sense is banned from public education these days.  the paranoia over being sued is rampant, and because of parents such as the aforementioned dad, we have to act like idiots regarding some things.

kind of like when we were kids-2 6 yo's playing dr was just that-innocent.  today it would be on the 6 oclock news with the headline "child sexually abuses another child".  story at 11.

sighs

-quick reply-

Meanwhile in the bathroom kids are smoking pot and some kid in the library is plotting to blow up the school. -laughs-

Seems just a little off to me, kids are learning to be social at this age, I wouldn't think this would help except to make them feel even more awkward...

Don't worry, if a kid is actually going to the library on their own, they are probably already on a gummint watch list.[8D]

I fear that we are becoming emotionally vacant and handicapped we have ever seen in history.

It wasn't like he hugged some random girl it was his GIRLFRIEND and she had no problem with it. Shit I saw worse things in my high school. fuck We did worse in my theater class. At least we earned out probation status from the principal.  And assigned seating at lunch? WTF ?!. I am liek this extreme PDA in school, bad. Hugs holding hands, not of importance. If someone complains about touching, fine make a deal out of it. If not shut and worry about making sure a fair number of your senior class actually graduates. Worry about the weapons beign brought in, the bullies targeting the weaker outsider kids, the drug dealers just off school property.

This is ridiculous. In high school and middle school for Me, hugging was a normal part of every day life. It's how we greeted eachother in the hallways and in class, it's how we parted ways, and it's how we offered encouragement or comfort for any number of situations that may have been unpleasant or hard to work through. Discouraging and banning physical contact with other human beings is a step in the wrong direction. A hundred years from now we're all going to live in little bubbles and never have to even look at another person. Which makes me sad. :(

He received 2 reprimands, one for getting up from his assigned table in the school cafeteria and the other
for the one-armed hug.  A 3rd reprimand would have earned him "in school suspension" or detention.

Things have changed alot since I was kid. We used to be allowed to be kids. Not anymore. Safety is one thing, but government pushing over-bearing rules for kids to live by is nuts.

It's crazy to have a no touching rule at school. Is this for all the schools in that area? I think alot of the laws are out of control. Another good example is the sex offender laws. It's pretty bad when religious groups can marry off 14 year old girls to 40 year old men (I'm sure these perverts have sex with their child wives), but if someone has sex with someone only 1-2 years younger than them, they're a sex offender.
