i went to 4 different high schools so i never got a chance to make good friends of which i stayed friends with over the years.  In the one HS i stayed in for 2 years (9th and 10th) i had the best time and was friends with everyone. i joined an alternative program so i would be able to create my own classes (we decided what we wanted to learn) - it was an experimental kind of 70's thing lol... it was creative and fun.  i got along with everyone but never was able to "hang out" as i always worked in my sisters business to make my own money.  by 11th and 12th i was sort of burned out from a lot of stuff and i just lost interest in school in general - i passed classes pretty easily with little effort and attendence (i cut a lot) . i actually dropped out in 12th  but i only had about 3 credits to pass so i went to a summer adult HS in another state and finished up my HS in 2 months. i didn't have friends or try to make any the last 2 years - was too busy with other stuff (working and taking care of my younger siblings)  Kinda always felt i got cheated out of a real HS experience.  i haven't kept in touch with anyone from school but do have a best friend that i have known since i was 5 - we grew up in the same building and to this day are best friends - shes closer to me than my own blood

In the '60's it wasn't cool to be a female athlete or a 4.0 student so I definitely wasn't in the "in crowd".

I sort of drifted throughout all the groups. Some might say I was popular. I was Cheerleader Co Captain, dated the Quarterback, Homecoming and Prom Court/Queen, Science/Math Geek, BrainBowl, Student Counsel, The Newspaper staff, Thespians and NHS. I also smoked so I hung out with the party crowd/stoners as well. I grew up in a pretty small midwestern town so there wasn't much to do on weekends but keggers out in the cornfields, cruise Eldorado and make boys suffer.

Hey! Have you been holding out on us?  Where are the funny stories from cheerleading??? (taps foot on floor patiently waiting...)

Who Me? Funny stories? You mean like the time I "forgot" to wear the little cheer panties under My skirt? Nope, wouldn't have any of those.

LOL... Please elaborate!!  Was there someone spotting you?

Greetings

I attended a private school in which basically no one was any more 'cooler' than the person sitting next to them. Everyone HAD to participate in a sport of some kind as well as some 'geeky' extracuricular activity. Though I am sure that there were cliques that were more popular ( meaning just groups that hung out together ), I don't think of them in the sense that they were 'cooler' than anyone else.

I wish you well

I was the extreme loner. I mostly went to prep schools, where everyone got along. The cliches existed, make no mistake, but pretty much everyone got along well, and parties were more open-invitation. Not that I went to many.

I was respected more than anything else. Teachers would often ask me to correct them in class and no one would bother me when I decided to get up and leave at any point (as I often did).

I still remember waking up on a bench one afternoon and finding two girls in short skirts sitting on my chest and stomach.. no, I still don't know what that was all about. They didn't seem to mind me being there, and I went back to sleep.

Highschool there was, in general, a nice place. I got to debate literature with John Grisham's daughter, played football with Howey Long's oldest and middle kid (though the middle kid ended up on my shoulder, being used as the ball by the end), and.. well, all sorts of funny stuff. The school was a great place if you just want to start dropping names. My little brother truly enjoys the bragging rights.

I guess I miss it all. I think I'd still be a loner if I went back there. It's who I am today.

My school didn't actually have a cool group.  I was one of the smart kids, but we didn't really group together, everyone knew everyone else (not a big school) and we just hung out and hung around with whoever was there.

Maybe it was the natural Australian sense of apathy - we didn't want to waste our energy on forming cliques.

Wow, maybe we should start a thread about the clarinet being the dominants instrument of choice.  I was also first chair carinet when I was in school...

Yeah, it's cause the flutey girls were too foo foo.

Hey now... not ALL the flutely girls were foo foo.... besides, at least we had Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull for a 'cool' role model.  Can't say I know of any really famous rockin' clarinetists.*

I was a geek in high school. All of my friends were older than I was.
I was a very lonely girl my senior year.

I was a regular kid, I could move between different crowds.  What was funny was the "bad" kids were always trying to get me to hang out with them.  I was too shy to go to their beer parties in the woods.

Alto, Bass, and Contra-Bass (clarinet, that is) during concert season and the only guy who was big enough to carry the dual bass drums in marching.  AFJROTC, French Club, Band....I was one of the D&D geeks and had friends in almost every clique in H/S, but considered myself an "outsider".  I had several opportunities to move into the "popular" crowd, but always passed them up as the same opportunities would not be afforded to my closest friends.

I was a cheerleader who happened to hang out with the rowdier crowd at school. Even though I got good grades and was in the top of my class; I was also constantly in trouble for doing some stupid thing. I have always felt more submissive than anything, yet, in school, I was the one who usually came up with the ideas for the stunts we pulled , so I guess you could say I was a leader and not a follower. Some run in's with the law as a teen helped to change my attitude for the better though.

I was a proud member of the clique that hated cliques.

Until we found out that that made us a clique.

I followed the rules, recognized that the power lay with teachers and while I certainly never slept with any, I sure as hell did everything they asked - the first time.

I wasn't mouthy or pushy and didn't have a smart comment for everyone that came down the pike that didn't fit in with what I thought was popular. The boys I went out with were rather "opinionated" and we usually did what they wanted to do. Hence, I was not one of the popular crowd.

I was quiet and a good student. Member of the Honor Society, choir, drama, and for a little while, in middle school, a foo foo flutist. I worked for a sheltered workshop assisting those who were cognitively impaired because my assistant principal had gotten me the job. Little did I know she was outlining the rest of my life.

My favorite thing to do in high school were the choir performances, drama and of course, twice every year, we would get on a bus and drive the three hours to Stratford, Ontario to go see the Canadian National Shakespearean Company perform. I lived for October and April.

The best thing from my high school years, I didn't even recognize as the best till many many years later when one boy I had a crush on back then (we'd played grope and tickle along the way, but as with most high school crushes, we drifted apart) contacted me on a bdsm personal's site. He never knew it was me, but since he used his name in his e-mail address, I knew in an instant it was him. That e-mail has resulted in me coming back into contact with someone from high school, discovering that he's a really great guy - and a dominant (imagine that!) and finding a friend. He's not my Master, but definitely my friend.

A couple of years ago, my Master saw my high school senior picture on the wall at my parents' house. He kind of clicked his tongue and said "those poor boys... they never knew what they had did they?" And he was right. They didn't. But then, neither did I back then.

I just received my invitation to our 30th class reunion. Haven't decided if I'm going to go or not. I know there'd be no question and that I'd go in an instant if my Master was going with me, but he's already said that's not the place for him, so now, I'm not so sure. I live in a small town and see some of the people I graduated with around town as it is. Not sure going back to see all those folks again that I'm not friends with today is worth the 50 bucks plus a new dress it'll cost... and...wait... a new dress....hmmm

I may have to rethink this.

Like GeekyGirl I was too busy with the Horse crowd to fit in well with the school crowd.
Too smart for the freaky people, too weird for the smart ones who didnt want to associate
with the cowboy boots and flanel shirts from back in my day.  Guess I've always danced to
my own drummer.

i had a similar high school experience.  Too freaky for one crowd to smart for the other but was welcomed in any crowd.  i have never been 'popular' but can't recall being shunned either.

Juliet - you should go.  My 30th was last year, I attended (by myself), it was the first class reunion I went to.  It's fun to see how much some people have changed.  Who's successful, and yes who peaked in high school, etc.

I didn't go to my 20th this past November.  I'm still in contact with the people I hung with so it would have been pointless.  And more importantly...I'm not working at the moment and just felt I wasn't showing myself to my full potential.  It was more of a pride thing for me.  Being "Mom" on a resume isn't all that exciting.

I was a brainy kid that hated school, hung out with the misfits and various stoners for my freshman year. My father passed away only months before I went to high school, and I became disassociated with all the activities I liked before he passed away. I quit playing basketball and ditched constantly because I had trouble thinking in class. I fell very behind,  I also became seriously ill and missed three weeks over finals which caused me to flunk all my classes. So I requested to be put in alternative ed in order to catch up after being more than a semester down... and I graduated a semester early

I did not hang with anyone after that, I was too focused on getting out of school. I hung out with neighbors that were older than me, not people in my peer group.
