I am fasinated with the thought of having something inserted into my penis. I am worried about damage to the inner walls and if the opening and inner walls are stretched will they come back to the same size.

Rule 1: Don't insert anything that wasn't designed to be inserted
Rule 2: Clean it thoroughly first
Rule 3: Use lots of lube
Rule 4: Don't force anything - let it glide in under its own weight
Rule 5: Have a pee immediately afterwards as the urine flushes any possible contaminants out again

Follow those rules and you'll have a safe experience. Some people enjoy it, some don't.

Don't count on the urethra rebounding to it's previous size if you stretch it. It probably won't.
Sterile is more than a good idea; it's essential.
