Two school districts put in place a plan that would assign public school students to schools on the basis of their race. The Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision declared this to be unconstitutional and violation of equal protection. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said the school districts "failed to show that they considered methods other than explicit racial classifications to achieve their stated goals..." The ruling will affect school districts nationwide in how they draw boundries for public schools. Two districts, one in Kentucky and the other in Washington state that were named in the suit, put forward a plan that would redraw the boundries so that public schools would have more diversified classrooms. A number of parents objected to the plan and filed lawsuits. Two federal appeals courts backed the school districts. But today the Supreme Court has overturned those rulings. Some say today's ruling may pave the way for a future suit against colleges that use affirmative action to diversify their student populations. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070628/ap_on_go_su_co/scotus_schools_race_11
