ORIGINAL: Aylee A Red velvet cake is a type of rich and sweet chocolate cake (though it is often made without chocolate flavoring) which has a distinctive dark red or red-brown color. Common ingredients include buttermilk, butter, flour, cocoa powder, and often either beets, or red food coloring. It is most popular in the Southern United States, though known in other regions. The most typical frosting for a red velvet cake is a butter roux icing also known as a cooked flour frosting. Cream cheese buttercream frostings are also popular. My google-fu is strong! Thank you, self-proclaimed forum hottie, for your research which confirms my own. But what Google can't tell you is the subjective, emotional experience of this type of cake. I've never even heard of it until this year, yet it's been a southern tradition for who knows how long. Perhaps I live too far south in Florida to have its influence spread to me, for no one else in my locality seems to have this fascination and love for the cake as folks on this board do. Thanks bounty for sharing your experiences with this cake. But, my other question remains unanswered... does it go with Wild Turkey or Jägermeister?
