[... i never did understand ravioli filled with mashed potatoes ...]

Pierogi just means, "To boil."

Of course they can be EXTRA tasty if you deep fry them after boiling!

Pierogi or vareniki are half circular dumplings of unleavened dough, stuffed (singularly or in various combinations) with mashed potatoes, cheese, farmer's cheese, bryndza, cabbage, sauerkraut, meat, mushrooms, or other ingredients depending on the cook's personal preferences. Dessert versions of the dumpling can be stuffed with a fresh fruit filling, such as cherry, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry, peach, or apple; stoned prunes are also sometimes used.
Mashed potatoes mixed with farmer's cheese and fried onions is a popular filling in Poland and Ukraine. In Poland this variety is called Ruskie pierogi. A popular filling for pierogi in Canada is mashed potatoes mixed with grated cheddar cheese.

Someday, children, I will explain to you all why Passover is also called, "The Festival of the Unleavened Bread."  I will also explain what Ashkenazic means.

Bounty,

No negative in your life is going to make higher math VERY difficult.  Just sayin'.

On a serious note, I am glad to hear that you are doing personal spring cleaning along with the material spring cleaning!

Higher math has always been rather diffcult for me, that why my double major was history and ind arts...yes thats needed to become a footnall coach smile..Every once in a while one must take a personal stock of his life and if need be get it baCK IN ORDER,I have had a few personal problems that has been needed to be delt with and I kept putting them off until they become several hugh ones but all is well that ends well..

Glad to hear it Bounty!

It is not so much a matter of how you get there, but what you do once you arrive!

Aylee (and anyone else who cares)- my research shows that the Ashkenazic are the German-European-Russian Jews and their descendents.  (The Sephardic are the Spanish-MiddleEastern Jews.)  Yiddish belongs to the Ashkenazic.
i heard an item on NPR recently about the man who wrote the Yiddish books that were adapted into the sentimentalized Broadway Show "Fiddler on the Roof".
Are perogies a dish of this cultural group?

To change the subject a little.... to all those who are struggling with Freshman College English classes and the required research paper being written....that is not the end.  That is just the beginning.  Almost ALL college classes will require research papers to be written - and they will not all be MLA format. History classes use a different style (always written in 3rd person).  It will be so frequent that you will be citing references for the rest of your college career.  Even in business it is absolutely necessary to cite your sources if you did not invent something yourself.  Almost the GREATEST SIN in business is to present something as your own work or idea when it is not.

this girl goes back to doing the laundry.

Fluffy, most likely, although we call them pirogen or kreplach (which look like tortillini and you put them in soup).  It is the whole "unleavened" thing, which is considered rather important at times.  LOL
