subversiveone -> NuvaRings (6/13/2005 11:51:33 PM)

Are any of Y/you on the NuvaRing?
I tried them for the first time, took it out when i started cramping really badly and now have my period. I feel awful!
I am bleeding horribly and feel very cranky. Nothing satisfies me.
And then there's my sex life....
My new partner and i are primarily having oral sex, and what id call mutual masturbation. I won't go into a lot of details on the why's and why not's but sexual intercourse isn't an option for us right now. He can last for periods up to a half an hour or more without orgasm during oral and i seem to be taking as long if not longer. We both turn each other on tremendously though. I'm thirty and he's fortyfive. We both have very strong libidos so that isn't it either. Do you think, as crazy as this sounds, that the influx of hormones has anything to do with my inability to come? I can't totally blame the ring but it's been present during the majority of our fledgling sexual relationship. And worse yet, im feeling very un-subly right now. I know that will pass though. Do you get like this on your periods? It's not like i don't want to be touched, which may be common during a cycle, but i feel very dissatisfied and bitchy, which is totally opposite for me.
I guess i just have to ride it out.
any suggestions?

I'm not sure what help I can give, but I can definitely sympathize. You see, back in the days when I had to take birth control I was unlucky enough to get every bad symptom in the manual and a few that weren't known about till a few years later. I'm talking about a few years on the pill, and then a few more years with the IUD. Then at age 35 I finally got a tubal ligation (like I had been begging for for almost 20 years and my problems were over).

Anyway, I notice when looking up the NuvaRing (which I had never heard of till your post) that one of the potential side effects is:

• • Using NuvaRings may cause headaches, depression, mood changes, or decreased enjoyment of sex (infrequent.

Take it from a veteran, that the "infrequent" comment is meaningless if those symptoms are happening to you and you have my sincere sympathy if that is indeed what is happening in this case. I got massive mood swings and depression while I was on the pill and when I tried to report it, I was told that "it was all in my head" (well, I guess that's where mood swings and depression do live, but still [:-] [8|] )

Then, when I was going through my problems with the IUD, I had numerous "experts" tell me to give it time (I was doing labour pains every period while my body tried to get rid of the thing). While this is good advice because for a lot of women symptoms do stabilize, if I had to do it over again, I think I would have started to ignore the experts in a few months rather than putting up with it for years.

In summary, I would listen to your body about this issue and be aware that your crankiness may have as much to do with this new treatment as with any background stuff that is going on with your life (including the enforced "celibacy"). Give it time, but don't give it too much time.

Alix

subversiveone-
I have used the NuvaRing for two years and it agrees with me. For some reason, though, any sort of pill does not agree with me. Perhaps the NuvaRing doesn't agree with you for some reason, and if you suspect it's the culprit, it probably is.
As Always-

Thanks! a good friend of mine, who worked for an ob/gyn for years said the same thing... no more nuvarings for me...however, she did say that any time you start b/c again after many years you will get some of these symptoms. I guess the sexual 'disfunction' thing is what really pertwerbs me. Upon further thought, my problems seem to stem from the penetration issue moreso than anything else. I may have to start a Viagra thread for that one ;)

Sweeticing -> RE: NuvaRings (6/15/2005 1:48:03 PM)

Hi there I have used Nuva ring for 2 years right now I'm not taking it because it messed up my sex life. It is hormones I never was in the mood for any sex. As soon as I went off of it for certain reasons my sex drive came back with vengeance now hubby is like don't use them.. :) good to see a dom beg lol

anyhow I did love them tho . After about a year my period was very light and short I did have some cramps but not too bad. Sex with the ring in was never a problem no one really felt it unless they were looking for it. It also did help with pimples my skin was acne free.And of course it done its job I never got pregnant with it . It was great to use it and more or less forget it unlike the annoying everyday pill. There is a site you can download off the computer for free and it keeps track of your ring and tells you when to put one in and when to take one out.

I can not take the pill form it caused me to gain a lot of weight, hair fall out and blood pressure went up.It usually takes 2 months before you can say the birth control has fully taken effect that is why they say in the first month to use a 2nd form of birth control. When I stopped taking the nuva ring my acne came back and I have bad cramps.So you may want to try it again for 2 months but talk to your doctor about pain it could be a number of other things that cause pain near menstruation.
