Is there anyone out here on collarme that likes to fish (from land , not from a boat)?

I am hoping to get some positive responses and then ask some questions.

I know there are a million internet sites about fishing and also books in the library but I want to interact with other people, hence my posting on this forum.

In case you are wondering where this is leading, I live right by an incredibly beautiful park, that has docks right on a River , with built in benches where you can fish from. I go there quite often to fish but never catch anything. That is why I have a bunch of questions.

YAY!! I love to fish!!

I grew up in the country and I went fishing with my grandparents ALL THE TIME from practically the moment I was born.

Where in the country do you live? That will let you know what kind of fish you can catch. ALso, are you fishing from an area where tons of people are fishing? that could affect your fishing success as well.

I'm here to answer all your fishing questions...

Thanks for replying!!. I live in southern Florida and there is a big river near where I live. So this would be fresh not salt water fishing. Alot of people do fish from this park.

First off what is most important, the bait? the kind of pole? the time of day I go fish?

It is soooo frustrating I never catch anything. I will be honest though , I am not going to touch a live worm, I have been using those fake rubbery things. The pole came with a little kit of them.

Is it better to throw the baited hook then let it sit or to do it multiple times and move it around alot? I prefer doing the latter, it is alot more fun for me.

IF I do catch a fish and it is too little and I let him go , will he be okay?

If I make noise will it scare off the fish or is that an old wives tale? I will tell you though that everyone else one the dock is totally silent and I would never make noise and disturb anyone else but I was wondering if that was really true.

Is it true that it is easier to catch a fish before it is going to rain?

I lvoe fishing!!!! My Master and I go as often as possible.

Ok...most important...Based on what you've said about teh way you like to cast multiple times, I would say you may be better off getting some type of lure. Lures come in all shapes and sizes. Rule of thumb...The bigger the lure, the bigger the fish you'll attract. A crappy usually doesnt hit the same size lure a largemouth bass would. By the way, bass are really fun to catch. THey put up a good fight.

Also, if you are looking for fish that you can take home and eat, that may influence your choice of bait a lot. The best bait I have found that works well for getting many different species of fish is, unfortunately, the nightcrawler. Yes, they're slimy and gross, but keep a towel with you, and you'll be just fine. Besides, if you are the one who holds the fish and gets it off your hook, a worm shouldnt be any problem.

Most fish will be alright once you release the hook and let him go free. But, if you find that the hook is buried deep in the fish, the best thing to do is cut the line, and let the fish go. Chances are good he'll be ok.

The noise thing....If you go blasting a radio, you may scare them off. but, Ive never found a difference if Im jsut talking. I think its just an old wives tale.

Some fish are more active and hungry before the rain. Like catfish, though...the best times are the cooler times of the day, the closer to dusk and later, the better.

I hope this helps you out some. If theres anything else I can do, let me know. Or.... Tell me to shut my yap

Kisshou......

I happen to live about 1000 feet from one of the most pristine Steelhead and Salmon river's in Oregon. Even during Winter, the water is so clear that it's reminiscent of bubbling champagne. The problem is, we have so many hillbilly's up here that their idea of fishing is either a gaff hook or they stand from the bridge above the river with a Deer rifle and shoot into the masses. Then they just wait to see what floats to the top and hookem' out. We call it Hillybilly fishen'. Sad but true.

Thanks for your reply and all the information. Since I have never caught anything I have not had to actually touch a fish yet. Where would I get a nightcrawler? If it is alive there is no way I could stick one on a hook. What about the rubber worms, do they work?

Also , do you catch fish every time you go fishing? Now it has sort of become a challenge to me, to actually catch one and not just go and have fun. I just wonder if it is more fun actually catching fish then fishing, and I realized I won't know till I actually catch one. (hope this makes sense)

If you have any great fishing stories I would love to hear them :)

If you won't touch a simple worm you won't touch a fish, They're way worse than worms. They're slippery they are slimy and if you handle them to much you could wipe off to much essential slime.

Yes I have handled fish, I used to go fishing and catch and release just for the fun of doing it, but I found out it hurts their mouth, and I am to soft hearted to hurt the fish.

Night crawlers are huge giant worms, they are usualy found in compost piles and such, or you can buy them from bait stores.

Those lil fake worms rarey work unless yuou can mimic worms squirm perfectly. fish are only interested in stuff moving across their invorment

UtopianRanger, it sounds so beautiful where you live, down here they imposed a ban with severe penalties on net fishing. Hopefully it won't be a swimmer floating to the top one day....

proudsub, I love just getting to see your adorable icon. Have you ever compared golf to fishing where there is skill but also an element of luck involved, also participants in both sports seem to become slightly obsessive

FelinePersuasion, I am hoping if I bat my eyelashes and wiggle like a worm , Someone will unhook the fish for me *smiles*

I am hoping to get in some time fishing this evening, we will see how it goes

Thanks for all your replies

kisshou...

Normally, yes I catch fish everytime. Nightcrawlers, like FelinePersuasion said, are available at any bait shop. Or, hang out in your backyard and start digging!

Sticking the worm with a hook isnt all that hard. You just have to be sure not to poke yourself. And dont worry, it usually doesnt kill the worm...Thats for the fishes to do.

THe fish are a lot slimier than the worms. both of them though, are nothing to be afraid of, as far as handling. The fake worms are hard to fish with, since, as mentioned above, you have to wriggle them, and mimic their natural action. Best bet is the real thing.

Go out, take a bunch of worms, and jsut have fun.

You can get worms. You can also get little "bullet bait" which are these crazy little white and flourescent yellow colored balls that smell really awful and supposedly attract a lot of fish. My theory is, the more money you spend on it, the less fish you're going to catch, if you get my drift.

It is true that noise scares fish away. They are very sensitive to noise, and little things like making noise in the water makes the vibrations travel to them. There are also lots and lots of other things that fish are sensitive to, like the time of day, temperature, and the weather. They are very sensitive creatures.

The best times to fish are usually in the early morning (very early) or in the late afternoon. Think about wild animals. When the heat of the day is at its height is when they are going to sink to the bottom and stay cool.

Also, it is good to try multiple areas. Sometimes you'll leave your bobber in a while and you just won't get any bites. And sometimes you'll hit a hotspot and you'll get a lot of bites.

Patience and practice are KEY.

Thanks, the icon makes me feel younger.

I agree with the obsessive nature of both sports, and you are right both skill and luck play big rolls in both. Our golf course runs along a very popular steelhead river and we are continually cursing the fishemen who walk down the golf course to get to a new spot. GRRRRRR.

that sounds like a great time! I didn't get to go fishing because we ended up with seriously violent thunder/lightening storms. Instead I got to indulge with some serious reading time. There is a great thift shop near me that sells books for 25 cents each! Another reason I like to fish is because I can read and fish at the same time :)

First thing...a plastic worm sitting on the bottom is just a bit of plastic sitting on the bottom. There is no reason for a fish to think that that bit of plastic might be food.

Second, if you got the plastic worms with your pole, they are probably of poor quality...don't have the movement necessary to attract a fish.

So....since you won't consider using any live bait, you should do a couple things. Your best bet is to go to the nearest bait store and ask questions. The sales people in those places are usually full of information and suggestions. They will tell you what to use and tell you how to use any lures that might be appropriate for the river where you are fishing. Or, you could watch those who are catching fish to see what they are using. When you see someone who is not using live bait, wait till they are settled and go over and politely ask some questions. I don't know of many fishermen who won't share their knowledge. Some lures can be tossed into the current of a river and just sit there and do their own movement to attract a fish. Others require that you cast and retrieve. So you need to know about the lure before you use it....and that is where helpful folks come in.

Many years ago as the mother of 3 boys, i decided that fishing would be good recreation for them. I took them fishing often. First we knew practically nothing and just used salmon eggs. By watching others and asking questions, we learned that sometimes lures work better. We had a local bait store whose owner was more than willing to show me and the boys how to set up our poles, tie knots, and even where the best fishing places were located. He helped with choices of line, sinkers, and which lures in which colors would work best. Over the years the boys won many kid fishing derbies.

The boys still fish and now take their own sons fishing. They seldom use live bait. They generally catch and release unless they want to eat the fish that they catch.
