Will we next be seeing "Warning - This chip has been known to cause Cancer in lab rats!"?

Of course it's California. A new Proposition is being considered so that a warning will appear on chip bags. I think the most disturbing part of the article was this: "The study looked at one ounce servings, which ranged from 11 to 20 chips".

11-20 chips is a serving???? Guess we should go back to smoking. Man if you smoke AND eat potato chips you're really in trouble.

Glad i don't eat potato chips anymore. I wonder if that occurs with veggie chips and sweet potato chips fried in olive oil.

Notice those are only the organic chips mentioned.
Or the ones that claim to be good for you.
I'm not a big chip eater to begin with but I can definately stop at a half of one of those chips. So I guess I'm in the clear I only like the crap/good for you chips.

"That chemical is acrylamide. It is an industrial chemical used in plastics, pesticides and sewage treatment that also can occur when starchy foods, such as chips, are processed at high temperatures. "
The article says starchy foods, so I assume that means any starchy food not just potatoes.

They have been researching and wanting to put warning labels on potatoes for a while.
Didn't know they were also after chips. French fries are on the list.

I haven't been following it well enough to know what other foods...but I do know potatoes of any kind are on the hit list.

Since the original article is no longer available at the link given, you can read about the compound in question, acrylamide at the World Health Organization's website. http://www.who.int/foodsafety/publications/chem/acrylamide_faqs/en/index.html

Just about anything fed to lab rats for several months will cause cancer.

The other day my mom was telling me that though the sun caused skin cancer a lack of sun was being linked to various other cancers, including breast cancer. Sheesh. Damned if you do... damned if you don't.

I am soo glad im on that low carb diet now LOL. My theory on cancer is it is cause by anything syntetic or unnatural. and the fact it is produced by extra high temperatures on starchy foods doesnt surprise me sense most of the baked chips out these days are placed in a ultra hot over and flash cooked in about 20 seconds.

Though having faced a loved one passing due to cancer, I dont think it was from all the chips he ate. Everything that enters the system seems to be in danger of being labeled "can cause cancer". "makes sure next person I kiss didn't have chips before hand".

No, it had to do with trans fat.

I really don't understand why Americans bitch so much when people point out that junk food isn't healthy. Deep-frying a potato in whatever crap Frito-Lay finds most economical can't possibly be good for you. Is it really so surprising that it probably causes cancer too?

Oh, and virtually anything CAN cause cancer. (For one thing, no one knows enough about cancer to rule anything out.) What's important is HOW LIKELY something is to cause cancer. If there's a serious risk, doctors obviously have an obligation to report it.

Because of that Oreo cookies has changed their recipe. No more trans fat. I think we are nearing the time frame that the new ones should be coming out.

I'm going to die of cancer anyway, so I'll eat chips if I want. It is heredetery for me and most everyone else in the world.
