ORIGINAL: LadyEllen A bit off topic, but...............Some might recall that I was taking my bank to the cleaners over the charges they had made to my account the last six years - its all due to a UK law that has existed for a while regarding what is fair and unfair as a claim for breach of contract on my part (ie exceeding an overdraft limit). Anyway, I wrote them twice with my complaint/claim, and each time they rebuffed it. I was just about to put them in court, when a letter arrived on Saturday with an offer to settle for 3/4 of my claim; the equivalent of $1500-00! Of course, its going to be different law in other countries, but it might be worth checking out even so, because what exists between you and the bank is a contract and there should be laws that govern what are and what are not fair charges for the bank in relation to any breaches on your part. E Banking laws must vary. How odd that they- man- I thought we were obsurd!! The oddity on me fee- is that it is from a credit union. I switched to credit unions when a bounced check made another check or 2 bounce to the point where I owed $100.00. So I said get lost. As varied as the US is... in this hick town, you can take a person that owes you money- even $20 or $100 before the magistrate. This is a HUGE reason why I filed bankrupsy....as I had a brush with the law in a different matter...and the last thing I needed was companies taking me before a judge- which basically would be the same judge. so- under advice of a good attorney i handled it legally. it was rather sleazy- but all LEGAL. Years ago I had an account in Canada. The red tape was much. Then I noticed the tallest buildings in Toronto are... "B-A-N-K-S"!! anyhow they surcharge non residents/noncitizens??? 10 or 15%; unless you can PROVE you paid Canada tax. This was around 1985. I hear other countries had a 25% surcharge.
