LadyEllen -> the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 5:33:37 AM)

Last night we went to our first fetish event since the ban on smoking in public places was introduced in the UK (1st July).

I have to say, it was a total pain in the neck all round. Several of us were smokers - in fact I think only a handful were not, and we had to go outside to smoke.

This of course is all well and good. The problem being that standing around outside dressed in that certain way is not a good idea in some places. We were spotted by some spotty youths almost immediately - though given there were several of us I suppose, they passed by. But I can imagine that in other circumstances there could have been the risk of harassment at the least and more likely violence. And with the summer here (slightly warmer rain) and the UMs roaming town into the evenings, thats an even bigger potential risk - "yes officer, those perverts did x,y,z" you get the idea - very amusing to the UMs, potentially catastrophic for us.

The other problem I found was that absent my nicotine fixes, I became quite drowsy. Not a good state of mind for play in my opinion. Still, stood outside in the rain, and with sufficient coffee available, I managed.

The smoking fetishists - now they do have a problem.

It would seem to me that a club with patrons where the majority smoke would create a safe haven to do so, considering the type of dress or lack thereof one might be wearing...beyond that....bring a trench coat and quickly cover up if you must go smoke.

RCdc -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 5:39:18 AM)

I am not a smoker, but Darcy is.
I am against the smoking ban because I believe there are worse environmental problems and people should be given the choice.

However, I also believe it is up to the clubs - especially BDSM ones, or where groups are held, to organise safer places to allow smokers to go.  If you are forced to go out onto the street in Fet gear, I would bring that to the attention of the organisers or those that run the club.

I live in NYC and we have a ban on smoking in public clubs, bars and restaurants and I have been a staunch supporter of such legislation for years...since back in the 80's and I was glad when it became official here in the city. That having been said, I also know many ppl in the community who smoke. Some leather bars here have tried to deal with the issue by creating a backyard or alleyway space where patrons can have their cigs and cigars, be outdoors, but under some sort of cover and away enough from folks like me, who have also paid their money to enter the joint and who are drinking as much beer as any smoker, but just don't want to be inundated with cig smoke. I don't want it in my clothes, in my face and certainly not in my lungs and for years bar owners never got a cent out of me b/c I chose to stay home rather than patronize a smoke-filled room.

I think it's real hard for some of the smaller club owners to make the adjustment and I also think some owners may not be able to adjust or think creatively about solutions to problems. But, I think most can be and take the needs of their patrons seriously. Hell, they wanna stay in business, don't they? I think suggesting to a club owner different ways to make the club more accessible to smokers and non-smokes alike, in most cases will be greeted graciously. So, I'd say, speak up where you see an area that needs addressing.

Good topic, btw.

MNN

Addendum: Gotta take some of what I say with a grain of salt...as I mentioned I live in NYC. As far as UMs passing by...well, I was at a leather bar this past Saturday for an event and the UMs passing by that bar...and they were streaming by in droves...were dressed way kinkier than I and most of the folks in the bar. So, everything's relative. [:D]

Viridana -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 7:35:52 AM)

An all over smoking ban became the reality here on june 1st so I know your pain haha. I don't really care if I go outside and smoke but of course I'm not ready either to become a free freakshow for the public either if I'm at a fetish event. Thankfully the place the party usually takes place has a sort of an alley in front of it and a metal bar door by the street so nobody can get there nor see there unless they are going to the party themselves.

truesub4u -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 8:22:04 AM)

Being a smoker myself, I just stay the hell home. I get so sick and tired of hearing how my smoke is killing someone. I just smile and tell them to go outside and take a deep breath and die faster than my smoke will kill them. The send smokers outside and still bitch about smokers. Can't have it both ways. Now don't get me wrong you non smokers... I can understand not wanting to stand in a room filled with smoke. But to hear the non smokers bitching about how the place looks to with everyone hanging around outside smoking... well it gets old. Like I said .... can't have it both ways.

I don't mind the ban on non smoking resturants. I don't like smoke in my face while eating either. I do not allow smoking in bed... let alone bedroom. My former master was good at rolling over and lighting one while I slept... fucked up way to be awaken...smelling damn cigarette smoke I can agree with. So yeah there are pros and coms to the ban on smoking. But there's alot more worse things out there killing everyone...even the non smokers.. to worry about just one problem...and not the whole. But I guess it's easier to target the smaller ..... than the bigger.

It's no where near a bad coming from a never before smoker.... than one that quit. The rehabilitated non smokers are worse than the ones that never smoked a day in their lives.

justasubmissive2 -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 10:22:20 AM)

It is not a matter of if cigarette smoke kills people. I am allergic to cigarette smoke. I go to clubs where there is smoking allowed, and I can't play, and after a while I have to leave because my breathing gets so bad. If there was a seperate room where people could go to smoke, I wouldn't care, but to smoke in the open play space is truly bothersome to me. I know there are alot of people that are this way. Its a public space, and people should be considerate to all people.

chellekitty -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 11:07:06 AM)

it is a rule at our parties that happen in secret urban locations (as opposed to the secred rual location) that if you smoke, you smoke outside, and before you're allowed to leave the play party area (even to go to the bathroom because it is right next to the entrance) you have to be covered up...here in san antonio, tx, that means more than street legal which is genitals and anus covered...because 1) some people wander around naked and we don't want to attract the attention of our local men in blue and 2) some people wear teddies (men as well as women) and other various sexy things that essentially have the naughty bits covered but still attract the attention of the people we rent from and well...we don't want to do that...
so, in conclusion...if its gonna attract attention you don't want and you must smoke, cover up...your rights stop when they infringe on other's rights (at least in the USA) and if they didn't consent to be part of your kink by walking thru the door after acknowleging that this would be going on...and by definition an UM can not consent...well its your fault if you end up in jail for lewd behavior or whatever...
my two cents anyway..
chelle

PS...the afore mentioned secret rual location has an indoor smoking area

CrimsonMoan -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 3:33:44 PM)

Just have to add my bit in. On fridays at my local goth night where just about EVERYONE spokes right down to the djs, the security and the promoter. considering its the only local weekly goth thing and we al tend to go out by the droves to catch a smoke break we attract attention anyways. Would it be easier to smoke inside? of course especiall when the weather is bad and ther eis only so much room under the awning. The problem is downstairs wher we are is very enclosed with no ac or windows not to mention the press of bodies. the smoke would just be another problem. Of course from about 1145- 1am which is closing time standing outside we get looks and hollered at by various drunk norms.

Myself and a few other who are in the scene also sport bondage and s/m apperal that is rather toned down but still stands out so its more directed at us. Two weeks ago i was very much sub/slave attire and took my coat with me everytime, of course it was also pretty chilly out. I had onmy collar, vinyl corset a pair of sheer boy short platform sandals and footless tights. I got some interesting looks and a few collar tugs from our resident Papa. So in the end it comes down to slap the coat on enjoy your smoke and the hurry back in to take the coat off

Mystique567 -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 5:09:11 PM)

I quit smoking in March (no groaning I am on the smokers side) I think that smokers get the short end of the stick, that until they make smoking illegal I think it is up to the people that have put they're money time and effort into the club to make the rules.

I also think that if they wish to have it non-snoking they need to make it so that everyone is comfortable.

CrimsonMoan -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 5:13:12 PM)

up here they are trying to make people quit by hitting them in the wallets. ontop of the sales tax is the 1-2 dollar tax which is of course why i switch tot he lil flitered cigars. they aren't touched by the cigarette tax despite bitching from the big wigs, they worded it wrong so that lil cigars fell through the cracks. two packs of cigars cost me what one pack of cigs would

ready4srvce4all -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 5:18:59 PM)

Hey, if you can't beat them, join them.  I quit smoking , and I STILL get the urges for lighting one up, even though it's been months.  People who had quit for years tell me they still want a toke.

I think things should be up to whoever owns the establishment.  Even as a smoker, I supported businesses VOLUNTARILY banning smoking.  I supported the ban in civic/public venues, because I know the majority of people do not smoke.

I am glad I quit, but I'm not preaching.  In your situation, I'd just get a bunch of nicotine gum, and when you need a fix, if you feel unsafe going outside, quickly chew four or five pieces.  I know that's expensive, but I don't know if the patch would do it for you in this situation.  The gum gives a quick fix.

Good luck either way.  And though I still go absolutely nuts at times wanting a cigarette, I am so glad I quit.

chellekitty -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 5:34:34 PM)

or to make your heart beat really fast you can slap a patch right over your heart...unless you have a heart condition...or are old...or are on certain medications...
just kidding btw, don't do that...

MasterofDrkness -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 5:47:35 PM)

I respect  the non smoking side of this , with that being said I am a smoker . why does it have to be that there can be no smoking in " any" building? why cant there be bars , clubs and restaraunts that are a place for smokers only ?  if you dont like smokeing .. dont go to these places . pretty simple to Me

winterlight -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/10/2007 5:54:50 PM)

there should be a separate room in the club where the smokers can smoke. Too bad they cannot have that. I cannot be near smoking because i have asthma and allergies. both of my parents smoked and i cannot stand the smell of it.

canupleaseme -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/11/2007 1:13:57 AM)

I think in restaurants and places similar the smoking ban is good.  I am a smoker myself but  Ihave to say I am now put off going to clubs of any kind fetish or dance clubs for the same reasons people have stated.  I certainly dont want to be outside a fetsish club in all my fetish clothes having vanillas and children walking past and giving lip.  Nor do I want to go to a 12 hour rave and not be able to have a cigarette the whole time.
My friends brother is a policeman in my local town and he says the amount of fights that have been occuring since the ban because all the smokers have been piling out of the pubs for a quick blast and being drunk and lary have started fights is crazy.  Its certainly put me right off.

MaamJay -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/11/2007 5:46:36 AM)

I'm a nonsmoker with asthma that is badly triggered by cigarette smoke, so I've never actually been to a nightclub, and for years I have avoided pubs, clubs and bars because I couldn't handle the smoke. I took my responsible decision of "don't go there" rather than risking ending up in hospital again (which happened in the Isle of Man because I was at an awards ceremony in a huge function hall and I didn't last long enough to see hubby get his award due to the smoke levels!). There is nothing quite so scary as being helped into a casualty dept and having the triage nurse take you straight through to the treatment area without even taking my name! That's when I KNEW how dangerous it was. Unsurprisingly, I am a huge fan of the nonsmoking ban ... while I respect the right for smokers to take whatever chemicals they want into their bodies, I don't believe they have the right to nonconsensually introduce it into mine. The problem with smoking rooms in most buildings is that they rarely have an airlock and a totally separate filtered exhaust system ... usually the air is recycled through the whole building and that's more than enough to set my asthma going. So that leaves outside, which I admit is a less than desirable option. Btw, I don't object to the look of smokers standing around outside ... it's the fact they inevitably congregate near doors so I have to take a deep breath and try to run the gauntlet to get in or out!

At the parties We ran, there was a strict no smoking inside rule ... but We did supply a covered outside area and sand buckets (it was a bush block in a dry area) ... and people were very good about only opening the glass sliding door minimally to get in or out without allowing the smoke in. Being that it was a big enough private property that all parking was provided within the grounds ... there was no problem with being outside in various states of dress or undress (other than cold air!) and no one was around to perve.

While I can understand why smokers are less than thrilled, I guess they've had it their way for lots of years and they've been able to go along to such places. Now they have the choice that I had ... stay home and don't take the risks ... or, unlike my illness, maybe they could work on putting their addiction on hold for a few hours every now and then? Exercise Dommly control over it maybe? [;)]

MisPandora -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/11/2007 8:32:21 AM)

I for one love it, even if I no longer can smoke my cigars in the leather bar.  It has allowed me to cut down on the amount of leather drycleaning that is obligatory when you hate cigarette smoke and wear your leathers in a bar.

Viridana -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/11/2007 9:00:48 AM)

Most smokers don't really mind the ban. I have no problems going outside to puff on my beloved coffin nail. But what bothers me about the legislation (at least as it is here in my country) that the clubowners are prohibited to make a smoking area inside and outside for those who do smoke. I can understand the indoor situation... but why on earth aren't smokers even allowed to smoke outside? don't get it.

bellaballanda -> RE: the smoking ban, fetish clubs and the public (7/11/2007 9:24:20 AM)

Here in CA it's been no smoking inside for a while.  The club I go to has an outer gate before the door and a large outer patio before the main entrance.  You can go out in whatever state of undress you want and have your cigarette (and sometime you need the fresh air anyway).

I don't know about other places but most of the rules that stated here in the states have to do with the health risks not to the consumers, but to the people who work in bars/clubs etc.  For a while there was a rule that you could allow smoking if a) all of your employees were smokers or b) everyone agrees to be exposed to smoking.  Then people got afraid that if you didn't agree to smoking then you'd get fired....

I think it would be great to have a bar/club where you could smoke.  I'm not saying I'd go there often, but I totally think it should be an option..
