freckles7 -> safety of IUD and S/M practices (6/19/2005 5:51:38 AM)

Hello to everyone here,

i have been reading the message boards for a while now and have found a lot of very useful insights and information here which i always find very stimulating and helpful.

today i have a question though which i can't seem to find an answer for in any of the threads or on the www ...
i have just had a hormonal IUD inserted last week. is it still safe to be boxed in the tummy either with the bare fist or boxing gloves when using an IUD or can that cause damage to the uterus? has anyone got any experiennce concerning BDSM and IUDs or medical knowledge?

thanx for the lively message boards,

freckles

I know a girl who is a fighter nwith an IUD and she punctured her kidney due to a direct hit to the stomach area. Maybe this is a rare thing, but it may be worth talking to your doctor about. You don't have to say that it's BDSM related, just say that you are a fighter of some kind.

Most IUD complications happen in the first 6 weeks of use. I doubt that you are going to cause any problems because of the addition of the IUD past this period. Of course as the poster before me stated, its not a safe thing to be punched in the stomach, but everything in life is a risk. It just depends whether you know and accept the risks.

However, your IUD should not increase that risk significantly after its in a month and a half.

That all said, if you ever start getting weakness (especially if worse when standing), diffuse abdominal pain, pain in either shoulder/shoulder blade, vomiting, blue-ish discoloration around your belly button or flanks, or discoloration of your urine, get thee to an ER. The worst stuff to hit in your belly is higher, so if you are going to choose this risk, lower is probably marginally safer.

Best,
Nick

i have had my iud for almost 4 years now and have never had a problem. We just do not do anything that could cause a problem (given the tenderness of the belly area, We avoid play there as a general rule). i was nervous about the iud at first but i have a very understanding doctor and once i explained our relationship, he was very helpful. He advised against any direct impact to that area not because of the iud in particular but because there is not much protection in general.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but it's not safe to be boxed in the tummy even WITHOUT an IUD. People have died from it--even just horsing around.

I agree with LordAndMaster. I don't think you're going to die from being hit in the stomache but the risk does exist. However, at the same time.. the risk exists that you could be hit by a lightning bolt or run over by a truck just the same. You have to calculate risk/reward and factor it into your decision. There is no easy way to say if it is or isn't safe... that depends on your personal defintion of the word. Can you be seriously injured from being punched in the stomache? Yes. Stastically it's less likely you will die from being hit in the stomache than a car crash, so that's something to think about. Life is short and either way you are going to die... keep that in mind as well. Fear should not completely rule your life. That does NOT mean I am recommending you go ahead and do it. I am simply trying to play devil's advocate and debate from all angles so you get the full picture. If you are uncomfortable with the idea and feeling pressured from someone else to consider it, then perhaps that should be your main focus. Do you really want to be forced into a choice that involves the safety of your health? What kind of friend would want you to do such a thing anyways?

As I said before, you have to sit down and calculate just how badly you want to do this and just how scared of the consequences you are. Whichever one comes up as a higher priority is the choice you should make. That's the simplest way I can word it. I hope everything works out for the best.

That's a misuse of statistics. Statistically you're more likely to die of cancer than of electrocution, but that doesn't mean it's safe to touch a live wire. People don't often die from being punched in the stomach because they aren't often punched in the stomach. The only relevant statistic is how many people (other than boxers and other people trained to receive violent blows) who are hit in the stomach end up being seriously injured because of it.

Anyway, to the OP: it's your life, and these are decisions that you have to make for yourself, but I think you need to inform yourself about the risks before you let people punch you in the stomach. It doesn't sound as though you're aware of them.

L.A.M,
You completely misread my point. I was not attempting to use those statistics to convince her that she should let someone punch her in the stomache. If you read the rest of my post I specifically say "I AM NOT RECOMMENDING THAT YOU DO THIS" and "Calculate risk/reward factors". Furthermore, the point I was trying to make is that almost anything in life can kill you and if you shy away from going outside in fear of getting hit by a meteorite you're going to live a very lonely and unfulfilling life. I agree with you on one thing, she should inform herself of the risks. That can be done by asking your doctor as someone suggested earlier.
