I wish him luck -- so that he finds companionship of others while over there -- and I wish for his safe return home again. While I spent time in the military I have never had to go to war, but I heard it can get rough. You may wish to ask around to see if you may be able to find other Dominants (and/or submissives) around who have or will be having their partners/household members deployed to overseas areas such as Iraq. Because from what I heard, you may be needing some support and friends as well -- and those who are in similar situations will be able to relate better to you than one who has not.
Lastly talking to some people who have been there, and who have returned may be good for him -- as they might also be able to help you both get prepared for his absence better (packages, phonecalls, letters, resources, what to pack, weather info, etc. )
The only thing I know about these things is that the work is hard over there, books are good for him, letters are good but can be sporratic, and watching the news can be bad on your nerves.... This is what others have told me about it -- but sadly -- again my experience is limited there.
Please please take care of yourselves, and make sure to spend plenty of time together beforehand.
