If the ice is continually moved in a circular motion over the area, then damage can be prevented because the tissue isn't in danger of freezing as it would if the ice were simply held in place. I've safely used ice therapy when treating acute inflammation and closed injuries. The area treated will go through four stages/sensations: cold, burning, aching, numbness. And each treatment can safely be administered for 5 - 10 mins. The tissue should be allowed to warm again before another application of ice is used. Caution should be used when alternating between ice and wax. As the ice desensitizes the skin, it is extremely difficult to tell if the wax is so hot that it is causing serious injury.
