winterlight -> Deaf and hard of hearing people in the l/s (7/11/2007 8:58:58 PM)

I was wondering if there are any deaf people in southern california that are into this l/s or anywhere for that matter.
What are some tips on playing and communication...

i am not sure about in southern california but i know that at a lot of leather events they offer a ASL translator...i also know that there are Deaf Leather titles...a quick search on the leather journal came up with previous articles on Deaf Leather contests or communities in San Fransisco, San Diego, LA and Northern California...last weekend was the International Deaf Leather competition where they were to choose a deaf or hard of hearing leatherboy, leatherman, and leatherwoman...no results posted yet...but anyway...they are out there...you just have to do a little research...find the right words to search...

good luck
chelle

ps they are always looking for hearing people that can translate at events...especially if you know lots of kinky signs...and have a good sense of humor...i heard someone try to mess with the newbie interpreter by saying antidisestablishmentarianism...the more experienced interpreter got up there and signed something like "he can't say this but i can" and flipped whoever was speaking off...we were rolling on the floor laughing...good times...

in addition to the above mentioned... it is very easy to learn basic ASL...usually done in about three sessions and well worth it since there are deaf people the world over.  Beyond formal classes there are books to teach ASL hand signals at any bookstore.  Even if someone know the basics then you have the start of communication with someone.

I know quite a bit of sign due to a nursing position I once had and I didn't find it terribly difficult to learn at all I can format basic sentences...however I have a very hard time "hearing" someone who signs quickly and I might get lost in basic translation.

I also suggest ASL vs American sign since ASL doesn't work on the "diagramed sentence" structure and leaves out what isn't really necessary to understand the sentence.  For example:   "I want to run to the mall and go shopping"  would translate in ASL as "I want run mall go shopping"

Hi

i am not deaf but i have a problem that i hear every sound as just as strong. my Master speaking, the cars outside, the humming of the refrigiator, nothing get tuned out, so it is sometimes hard for me to hear what is being said.

i had a play partner some years ago, and he would be anoyed i did not emidiatly follow his orders, he inisted on having backround music at the session. i had to sit down and explain to him i did not always hear him as his voice blended into the background noise.

i think whit any problem it is inprotant the Dom and the sub talk about it, so that both are awere of the other's dificulties, comunication is always inportant.

This must be the sign luanguage one of my mother's patients use, she can say a whole sentence in one or two signs. Do you know where one might go to learn it. i have considerd to do so. i have Aspergers Syndrome an Autism family disorder and on events many i meet many pepole that speak in sign luanguage.

Many community colleges offer ASL as well you can google "ASL" or "American Sign Language" classes with your town or state.  Good luck!

Edited to add I just realized I made a huge typo in my origional reply to this post.  I meant ASL or American Sign Language as opposed to "Signed English" which is a literal translation.  So every to, for, a is signed or spelled out.

Do a google search on "International Deaf Leather".  One of the females, Steff Juge, is out there, as is one of the former Ms World Leathers, Michelle Jackson, who is a terp and facilitates a class on learning finger spelling in ASL called 'flying fingers'.  Michelle is in San Diego.

I took American Sign Language in the 1970's. I took it from a Deaf Teacher and by far that is the best way to go. I have taken it from hearing teachers also but ran into gee, I don't know that one i will have to ask one of the other Deaf teachers. You can go to Office Depot or some other type of place like that they have some DVD's on basic sign language (it is a start) until u can sign up for a class in American Sign Language. My suggestion is that (if teacher suggests a place where u can go and interact with the Deaf) that you sit down for an older Deaf person and learn from them. They are more patient i was told .
Even though i am hearing impaired i will never be accepted by the Deaf culture because i grew up with heary's (hearing people). Even if i married a Deaf person i would not be accepted. This would be like me being married to a Black person. I would never be accepted into the Black culture. I am just using this as an example. I am going by what i learned in the 1970's mind you. To me that does make sense.
My suggestion is learn the sexual signs first because you don't want to accidentally sign something like Nice to meet you and by putting one finger up sign happy to F*** you. Yes, i have seen it happen....One lady learning was trying to come up with a name sign for herself and called herself Penis. Yes, it does happen. I am NOT joking.
Have fun learning. When i was learning it was not considered a language. You took it for fun. Today i understand it is part of the language ciriculum and is accepted.
Hope this helps. Btw you can get books out there on American Sign Language.
I don't use my ASL (American Sign Language) any more. Nobody to talk to.

Another thing they do have Deaf Bowling Leagues out there. Whether or not you have one near you , you should look into it.
