ok- as you may have heard PA state goverment shut down, over having "no budget'.  back to work they are.

for a good 30 years- they wondering about tolling I-80. [you won't find a nicer drive between New York and Chicago-: for me it has some nastalgia like some route 66. (Chicago to LA)

So lemme ask this=- is an existing road in your area turning tollway?

I dont like the way the US is "selling" its roads.

I am aware of Londons new pay more for peak hours in the congested area.  I doubt that would work here. [sorry]

Are roadways are serverly strained, not to mention the poweer grid.

I don't look at it as "selling" roads, I look at it as maintenance fees.  The money for repairs, maintenance and new bridges has to come from somewhere.  I'm grateful for the turnpike.

It seems odd they would try to place tolls on an interstate highway which presumably has significant fed funding.

Roads are also known as "rights of way" and anyone using them for ordinary travel should get a free pass. It's not really free, it just gets paid for by another method already. People or corps making extraordinary use of the highway, tractor trailers carrying goods or taxis - anything using the highway to make money, should pay more for the use of the highway and I think they already do via vehicle licensing fees.

To me a toll is just double or triple taxation. They squandered the money they already collected for this purpose and want us all to pay for it again.

The tolls are too high- I was mad at Ohio- they raise their fee every season!  Indiana- it has been $4.15 for nearly 20 years!!  tho Ohio put capital improvemnts- including a 3rd lane in most of i80- a major trucking co-ador. they updated the rest stops- they are very nice- so in Ohio you are paying for bathrooms, refreshments w/o leaving the road.

Chicago tolls- went from .40 a booth to .75 a booth. when that raod was built the tolls were to be TEMPORARY!  [i294]

Actually in California they sold the road.  For the 91 express lanes.  Reason I say they sold it is because
the city, county or whatever then after a few years of operation wanted to increase the lanes on the
91 freeway and the people who own the 91 express lanes blocked it.
They now are not allowed to add to there own freeway.

Prices are ridiculous along that stretch of land.  Peak times it is 5 dollars a ride and it only goes for maybe 10 miles max.
Add ten dollars a day to get back and forth to work on top of the inflated gas prices.  Its miserable.

Lemme throw this at you!  Pennsylvania- Bud Shuster; a republican; whom I split voted for. [he broght home pork]  had gotten my state 5 billion for roads- next runner up- Illinois- 1 billion.  this money was paid IN BY ALL 50 states!!!!!!!
this was w/in the past 10 years.

I see California is considering toll roads- or tolling the fast lane...

In the Seattle Tacoma are they are building some new bridges and they will have tolls. The only good thing is you can get a card, or maybe it's a sticker on your car, not sure, that gets read as you go by without much slowdown and it charges your credit card, so you won't need cash. I don't know the details of how that works, maybe someone else can add to it.  The new Tacoma Narrows bridge will open soon and they are planning the building of a 3rd bridge across Lake Washington, which will put tolls on two of the three bridges across the lake, around $4 i think, so you can imagine how heavy the traffic will be on the non-toll bridge.[:o]

I agree to a point, but here in the UK we are already taxed heavily on fuel and also pay an annual car tax, all of which is supposed to go towards the upkeep and development of roads, but which rarely does. Thus the plans to introduce toll roads over here really pisses me off.

Darcy, so they are "pushing" toll roads in the UK???

ild be fuming! US gas tax is PENNIES. even if you add it to state/county/city tax- it still is under $1.00. [guestimate]

i deplore the "EZ" pass. it is a de facto tracting device. i have a buddy that was going to "pay back a not nice guy"- i advised him to not have his EZpass  or his cell in his person/car!

Roger:nice speaking with you to.  You probably could meet mr or mrs right on the freeway.  You spend anywhere from 1/4 to 1/3rd of your day in traffic.  A local radio station used to do freeway love connection.  It was actually pretty successful.

Proud:  It is called fastrack on the 91 express lanes.  Essentially you pay a deposit to have a transmitter in your car.  You drive on the road it takes a photo of your car, you and your plate.  Then charges you for your tolls.
Essentially you pay 30 in advance..and they automatically bill your credit card when your 30 runs low.

The 91 express lanes said they had too much congestion on their toll roads so they had to raise the prices so people wouldn't travel them so much.  Think it worked?

Darcy:  we also have vehicle registration fees which are supposed to suppliment the cost of roads.  We are heavily taxed on fuel as well.  Depending on the state 1.50 a gallon between fed taxes and local taxes.  The amount of taxes are written on every pump at every station.

pahunkboy -> RE: Toll roads for you? ? (7/12/2007 8:54:46 AM)

PA has among the LOWEST car registration costs in the USA.  $ 36 a year. [regardless of year- or cost]  so a 60k SUVm $36 a year.  it recently went up from $24 a year.

It is crazy in Illinois. the fees are so high- i often did not bother to register my car, get a sticker, or insurance. funny enuff i went into Canada thru Windsor/Detroit, then back via Niagara Falls NY.  Getting into the US was a headache. customs DEMANDED to open my trunck. which on a $100 car was broke. so i called AAA.  not a word was said about expired license place- title not transfered nothing. go figure.  finances are better these days- so i keep that in order...but in those days- it was food or "compliance". [no joke]
