Hi I'm just looking for some helpful suggestions regarding insomnia.
Its something I have had on and off randomly for a while now.  And I'm going through a really tough week of it at the minute
I am aware that stress can cause it and have just had a very stressful few weeks with my house getting flooded out in the recen bad weather and having to move house.  But i'm now setteled in my new house which is lovely,  I have my boy living here with me now too and my u.m  and everything is good but I can't sleep at all.  I was prescribed tamazepam by my dr 10 mg and I took one last night and still couldn't sleep and was up all night only get odd half hours of sleep.  I'm soooo tired now.  I cant have lie ins because of my u.m and sleeping in the day just isn't an option.  I dont want to take medication if I can help it.  I've tried hot mik, having a warm bath , having a massage etc.  I don't drink tea or coffee so I'm nothaving caffiene at bed times or anything.
I have lavender and all the things I can think of.  Does anyone have any other suggestions that may be useful ? Bar knocking myself over the head with something I feel at a right loss and its starting to affect my moods in the day leaving me tearful and stressed over very silly things.  I;'m quite sure my u.m and boy are getting a bit fed up with my snappyness too I know I am .   Thankyou

i have insomnia due to effects of chronic illness.  i average 3 hours then am awake again, and this has been going on for years now.

benadryl sometimes helps.  and yes, they'll give you that in the hospital if you cant sleep, so its fairly safe.  it works for me, but gives me leg twitches, so tis a tradeoff....

exercise can help get your endorphin levels eased out again, as can yoga.  tis good as a stress reliever also.  once you're emotionally settled into the new house, you wont feel quite so out-of-place, which has bad effects also.  celestial seasonings sleepytime tea sometimes helps me also.

good luck on getting good rest

kitten, who oftentimes has the not-Sir reminding me to go take a nap especially when i've been up all night yet again.....

Sex.  Works for me every time.  I may not get a full night's rest, but I'll sleep :)

Oh well, yeah, exercise...LOL.  Seriously, I exercise an hour in the mornings and walk for an hour during the day and if I'm still not tired, then I'll exercise a bit more...really strenuous.  Then read some IT manual.  I guarantee that will put you to sleep.

sleep meds can be a good option, however temazepam is the worst one of the bunch.  it's HIGHLY addictive and i've found that when i've taken it (almost 9 months straight the first time and for a month or two once in a while since then when my insurance changes, etc) even though i feel slightly sleepy, i enjoy the rest of the feelings too much to sleep.  you may not feel much of anything though, since you're taking a rather small dose.  i took anywhere from 15-30 mg at night.  i never had ANY luck with anything else.

beyond that, making sure you have a good sleep environment is key, things like feather bed mattress covers, ear plugs, better shades, white noise makers...things like that can help.  also, i don't go to bed until i'm sure i can sleep..sometimes tossing and turning in bed can make it worse that night AND the next time you try to sleep.

also, i know it's hard to not feel guilty when you have a UM and you need a nap, but when i was diag'd with MS and wasn't sleeping and was dead tired even if i DID sleep, i soon realized that it was far worse to not take that nap than to take it.  now, no matter what i have to do, if i need a nap, i take it and i'll be damned if anyone can make me feel guilty about it anymore.  it's not a sin, it's a necessity sometimes.  no one would begrudge you night sleep, so if you're not getting that, what's the harm in a lil nappy nap.  ....just make sure it's not long enough to be a sleep cycle and mess up your PM sleep.

I have insomnia as well. What i can suggest may not work for  you but it does work for me. I would try cutting out as much caffiene as possible. Like no coffee or soda 2 or 3 hours before bed. Then if need be try tylenol PM or benedryl. over the counter meds. If that doesnt work try talking to your doc about rozerem or lunesta

Temazepam works for me fairly well. I take 60mgs at night but eventually I have to switch off to Desyrel (100mg) mixed with Ambien. The Desyrel gives me the most godawful nightmares so I can't take that for more than 3 nights in a row. Lunesta while having a very pretty advertisement doesn't do diddly for me.
OTC stuff works well for mild insomnia, the benedryl or tylenol pm (diphenhydramine, sp?is the active sleep ingredient in both) products are pretty good.

You may want to take a look at your sleep set up. Are the pillows okay? Dark enough, quiet enough? Are pets on the bed? Do you sleep with a snorer?
If you nap during the day that may be effecting your night time sleep.
Keeping to a schedule helps me as well. Up at the same time in the morning and in bed the same time at night. If I can't sleep I will get out of bed instead of tossing and turning for hours.

Good luck to you, well all of you cuz insomnia sux!

soft music (i particularly like loreena mckennit or the lake house soundtrack), if you drink, a glass of wine, wheat bag with lavendar (though this works best in cool weather)

if you can't sleep, don't stay in bed, get up and find somewhere else to read, or relax or what have you

cranberry juice straight works for me, but i have an odd metabolism!

I used to have terrible insomnia and there were two things that seemed to help me. First, keeping to a schedule--going to bed and waking up pretty much at the same times every day.   And second, never using my bed for anything other than sex and sleep.  No reading in bed, no watching tv in bed, no talking on the phone.

Oh, also, similar to what Bandit said, masturbation frequently works for me.  Usually after an orgasm or three, sleep comes pretty easily.

Try Valerian Root.  It's an herb and it helps you relax and have a good nights sleep without that drugged, drowsy feeling in the morning.

I tried valerian root a few years ago...if it's real stinky it's fresh...but I kept burping up that nasty "dirty gym socks" taste for hours...so no to that for me...SO not worth it.

I'm still a chronic insomniac, averaging 3 hours a night.  I won't take medication to knock me out or any kind of antidepressants, so I'm resigned to feeling that whenever my body needs the sleep badly enough, it'll come.

If you have coverage or cash [means]
I would advocate a visit to a naturopath.

Be completely up-front with them
about stresses and any other medications or supplements you may be taking.

Best wishes... ~k

LOL yep it is stinky, but it works well for me and is good when I need a restful nights sleep without the "hangover" effect of drugs.

Now if my sinuses/allergies are bothering me, I take a sip of Nyquil and not a full dose, and it helps me to sleep well.

Herbs for sleep - please use as a tea.  1 teaspon to 8 oz hot water.  If you are going to sweeten, use clover.

Chamomile
Cypress
Elder
Hops
Hyacinth
Jasmine
Lavender
Passion Flower
Peppermint
Poppy
Rose
Rosemary
Thyme
Valeian

If you plan on mixig the herbs - DO NOT mix more than two at a time.
Also when using herbs for sleep, you may need to drink it for 2-3 nights for full effect.

When drinking the tea for sleep, you can also burn one of these insenses (please do not mix); Jasimine, lavender, rose

because its a frustrating thing to me.  to sleep next to someone who sleeps naked, that you still absolutely adore, and hasnt had any sort of sexual interest in you for nearly a year?

so no, other than self-serve, it doesnt happen on a regular basis.

kitten, who tries not to think about it.

I agree a dose of Benadryl or Nytol ususally works for me, and keeps
colds away.
I also like the idea of the sleep machine that was mentioned.

Valerian works very well for sleep. Yes, it smells and tastes like dirty socks. To get around ths I use the fresh herb. Infuse Valerian and Chamomile into a tea, and let set at least 10 minutes. I add a pinch of Equal too. The chamomile makes the taste much more palatable.

It also comes in chlorophyll-coated tablets, which doesn't give you the repeat taste like the ones in a simple gel capsule does.
