Well, one very wicked idea that my former Master and dear friend and mentor came up with (thank god He never used it on me) was a cat o nine (or a crop, it would work for that too) made out of hawthorn switches I believe, though that would only really work if you were in to drawing blood like that. One that I have made that I am quite fond of is flat-braided yarn...with 30+ tails, it has a nice thud, the knots on the ends cause a bit of sting and a handfull of pony beads (the big ones) attached to some of the inner tails add the element of surprise. I've also found that industrial rubber works quite nicely, made in a similar manner to the leather ones shown on frugaldomme (gawd I love that site), and then stapled to a dowl rod.
