But Dahlia, I'll marry you (since we can do that here!) we'll drive all the boys insane and have them at our mercy ;)

-grins- Splendid! But instead of a traditional wedding could we theme it and have everyone show up in leathers? Muwahaha.

I'm a liberal, not sure if I'm thoughtful. I see little positive in bush. However, I'd hesitate to say he is one of the worst presidents. History was never my forte. I learned what I needed to to make it by. So, I don't exactly consider myself expert enough to make that anaolgy.

I just want bush out, and jeb not to make it in since bush is grooming him to run.

I want no more of our soldiers to die over oil.

I want our economy to go back up instead of continually going down.

I want American citizens to stop suffering in the streets. I want them to have enough food and shelter.

Just a few of the things I want that bush really doesn't care about.

OK, I'll bite. What good does a thoughtful liberal see in President Bush? I see one of the worst presidents in American history.

As I often do, I find myself the odd (wo)man out in this argument. I believe President Bush has been a good president and unfortunately got stuck with a set of circumstances that had to be cleaned up because the prior administration swept it under the rug. I agree with a good portion of his policy, although I think his Social Security Reform idea stinks, and I strongly disagree with his stance on stem cell research and gay marriages.

best regards,
fate (the liberal conservative)

Crimson? How fetching! I'm sure it'll hug all of the right curves and leave us with quite a few new toys to play with by the end of the reception!

I'm thinking something in a blend of deep purple and black. -small grin-

A thoughtful conservative can disagree with President Clinton on many subjects, but also see some good, and be part of a dialogue - the same with a thoughtful liberal who disagrees with President Bush.

-Immigration Policy

-Tax Policy

-Trade Policy

Those would be areas where the President's policy or proposed policy would tend to be redistributive, favoring the havenots (immigration and trade policy) and in the case of tax policy provide more revenues for redistribution.

We can't know for sure about the upcoming Presidential Tax Policy Advosry Commission report (it has been pushed back until Sep 30th) but my best guess is that they will propose something immensely populist - a two tiered tax system with anyone under $50k not filing.

I think a liberal would be most critical (and correctly so) of President Bush's Foriegn Policy, which is entirely rightist, Hawkish, and is in direct contrast to the redistributive impulse that characterizes liberals.

Mind you - most liberals don't feel this way. Just as the overwhelming majority of conservatives were incapable of any nuanced criticism of President Clinton (instead indulging in an emotional orgy of hatred) so to almost all liberals are incapable of any nuance in looking at President Bush - they are only capable of an emotional orgy of hatred.

This is to be expected - partisans are partisans.

PS - If President Bush is one of the worst presidents in history, then democracy must be systemically flawed - he was re-elected for a second term after we as an electorate got to see him in action. No confusion, no maybes or we will sees - America saw both president's Clinton and Bush in action in office - and hired him again.

I'm a little "d" democrat - I am convinced democracy works in a systemically superior fashion to any other political system to date. Presidents Clinton, Reagan, GW Bush were all retained by the electorate for a second term - ergo, they were good presidents. Presidents like Carter and GH Bush were summarily dismissed - bad presidents.

That hardly follows, Faramir. Hitler was one of the worst leaders in human history, and a majority of Germans wanted him in power. The fact that most people would vote for someone is hardly a vindication of their ability, effectiveness, or fairness. Why do you think the Republicans bother with spin-doctors like Karl Rove? Precisely because they know that merely stating the truth is not the best way to garner votes.

Besides, I am FAR from convinced that the United States had a fair election in 2004. Have you read anything about the issues? About 11-hour lines in known Democratic voting sections in Ohio? About the unprecedented and statistically eye-popping discrepancies between the exit polls and the final official tallies?
